I'm Struggling Here

It's this new forum set up?

I know that I'm going to be in the wrong here, and no doubt various members will try to "put me right", but I just cannot get to grips with this new forum system.

I'm struggling to post replies to a particular post ~ it wants me to "quote" my reply.

I cannot easily identify replies that I've made to posts ~ in the past any posts/replies I've made was in a diferent type face ~ now it seems that any post I've "looked at" is ????? Basically disappeared!!!

Having tried to get to grips with this new system and most members seems to think that the new system is great ~ all I can say is that I'm really struggling and whilst I'm reading the members posts, I'm not confident of making any replies when I would really like too!!

Please be easy on me because I am a long-term member of this site that willingly accepts that I'm a TOG, and 'putor stuff is a bit of an anathma to me!

The new site talks about "seperate tags" & "icons".

WTF is that all about?

I ask your forgivenes if I don't reply to this thread ~ basically it's because I couldn't find it to reply too!!!

Peter

you haven't read enough threads. It's been brought up as an issue many times.

Post your thoughts in the feedback forum

ps, it's a real issue for many of us, so the more that report it the better. One off posts will not be read by the moderators, as they don't have time to read every thread/post unless reported for some reason.
The feedback forum means they will at least read at some point

Hi Brendan

It's nice to think that at least one of my old friends on the forum is still "out there" and willing to help me?

As I said I'm really struggling to get to grips with this new format.

In the past I could answer a post "directly" and then if necessary logon and see which posts I'd posted a reply to and goto the "last post" now, it seems to me that I have to troll though all of the posts on a particular forum to see any answers?

I've no doubts that it's my lack of knowledge or 'putor skills that is the problem, but none the less, I feel somewhat agrieved that the latest up-date of the forum is leaving me with a sense that I can no longer contribute or be an active member of the forum!

Peter.

Hi Peter
Loads of people are finding it hard to get used to the new software and I'm still trying to work out a lot of the features and how things work, so please don't feel you're alone with that. The only way I've found to reply to someone in particular so far is to quote the post they made, then delete most of what they said and just leave the name. It's a right royal PITA but it works. Don't go dropping out of here just because of a bit of extra learning mate, it's just like learning the new things they want you to do on a training course
Keep at it and it will get there in the end ;)

It's not you, just the way the new forum software operates.Keep going, it does make sense once in a while, but it would be good if we could get it to operate a little bit like the old one, and let us see who is talking to who. You can do it by using hybrid mode, and that means going to User CP, and altering some settings.

If you log on (automatically) every time you come here then:

1. on the left side of each forum is an envelope symbol. If you have posted on that thread then there is a down arrow on the envelope.

2. If there are new posts on that thread then the envelope is sandy colour - if no new posts it is blue.

3. To use Quick Reply then click on the quill pen symbol bottom right of each post. If you want to use smilies or insert pics etc then click on the Post Reply button.

4. Along the top of the forum is a Quick Links and this leads you "Subscribed threads" which are all the ones you replied to or any that you have designated so as to follow them. You designate them by using the Thread Tools thing at the start of each thread.

Perseverance is the only route to success.

One advantage of this new forum is the "morning after pill" i.e. being able to edit posts next day.

When you are 'tired and emotional' and have reacted with understandable anger to some piece of patronising idiocy, it is good to be able to go back next day and tone it down a bit. :o

I also find the new format strange, once I have logged off a forum, say the lounge, when I visit again all the threads come back up as unread, where as before it would only have new topics or those with a reply. Is there anything in the userCP preferences that can be altered?

I'm also struggling. I have no idea how to find posts I've previusly replied to. No idea what all the colours and different symbols mean.

I can bimble around all that, but what I realy HATE is the "sort by". For me I want "thread start time". Now why can I not set that as a personal preference? You can do loads of other stuff that is either irrelevant or meaningless to me!

Boat44 - read my earlier post:

Along the top of the forum is a bar and one item on it is "New Posts" and clicking on this will show you all the posts since you last logged in. By checking this you won't miss any that have slipped down the list. (If not logged in it will show as Todays Posts).

ME TOO!

This was promised, and it's about time Dan broke his silence on it.

Getting really pissed off by it now

Hey! You've made my day.

It's good to see one's suggestions being implemented. I refer to the, ahem, brilliantly-titled thread:

Hi Dan, please can we have a "Morning After Button"

cannot easily identify replies that I've made to posts ~ in the past any posts/replies I've made was in a diferent type face ~ now it seems that any post I've "looked at" is ????? Basically disappeared!!!

will this help?
I have taken your sentence by left click [on mouse]-highlighted
cursor on edit-click copy
go to last post click
right click on cursor-select paste
up comes your selected sentence
of course this may not be your problem in which case I apologize

Thanks ~ At least I'm not alone!

Thanks for all the replies ~ I would have liked to deal with each individually but I don't know how too <s>.
Ferinstance I wanted to put a smiley face after the above comment but it looks like it may appear next to the title???

It took me some time to find this post but I eventually found it so that has to be progress.

I like the idea that the posts are colour coded if someone has replied ~ my problem was that I wanted to reply to MoodySabre so went off to find out what his first name was ~ having found it and clicked on the back button ~ which sent me back to the main forum page ~ it turned all the orange bits blue - dahhhhh.

It would be real handy if when I/we made a post reply the main title changed colour so that I/we could easily identify posts that we've replied to?

I intend to struggle on for now and see if I can't make some further progress with this new format.

Peter.

No your not alone I find the new format difficult and have given up trying to find threads I have replied to or even started - It's just TOO HARD. I find myself spending more time on other websites.

If you want to use smilies, insert pics etc then you need to go to your UserCP (top left on the bar at the head of the page) - under Edit Options (near the bottom under Miscellaneous) you need to change the Message Editor Interface from Basic to Standard. Save the changes. When you click on Post Reply you will now get all the bells and whistles:)

It's not hard - just click on Quick Links on the bar up top and you will see Subscribed Threads - these are those you have written or replied to and the colour of the "envelope" symbol tells you if there been any new posts.

You can also "bookmark" any interesting threads by using the Thread Tools at the top of each thread and adding them to your subscribed list.
