Hi all,

First post but have been hanging around the forum for a while now.

As the title suggests i'm sat on my new yacht, its cold as im out on the trots and while i have a gene i neglected to buy a fan heater!

Just turned the gene off as it was doing my flipping head in, only on for 30 mins. Its an old 700w clarke, came with the yacht, really suprized it worked as it was in a right old state.

Going to be my first night aboard her. Loving it so far but still 13 hours or so till sunrise. Got my snacks though!

Anyone else on theirs? Cold or warm!?

Regards

James

I have a strong suspicion your love will keep you warm :)

Welcome to boating - the old fashioned type !

A 500 w heater would scarcely make any difference, but you might like to find a couple of bricks and stick them in the oven, then when pretty hot , wrap them in an old pullover and stuff them in your bunk. Toasted toes is the secret of a good night's sleep.

Well done on three counts,
1. Buying a boat.
2. Posting on here.
3. Being on your boat.

I have just come back home after my first sailing of the year.

Like the bricks idea, but i dont have an oven, i do have a dubious looking twin hob gas thingy! Gonna replace the pipe work and have the cooker serviced before i fire it up though.

Hi & welcome.
I'm on mine & it's nice & warm as the webasto heating is running as well as the electric heater (in marina!) :)
If you haven't got one you need a hot water bottle for bedtime ;)
Where is your boat?
It's pretty chilly here in the South West.

In view of this post you may want to ignore my hot water bottle suggestion;)

One of the kids (19) on the boat tonight, we spent new year on the boat following a good out in Whitehaven (Vagabond pub 10/10) and will be down again this weekend hopefully to get out. 19 is her age, not the number of kids (they would hate being called kids:-))

My boat is always ashore in the winter but I've found a hurricane lamp gives out a fair amount of heat and also saves your battery(ies).

Congratulations! A new boat is special, the first night aboard even more so :-)

We're on ours now. In a marina in Portsmouth Harbour, Eberspacher purring away, some music on, all good!

And yes, hot bater wottle is a must-have. Particularly one in a furry case.

i will be getting a heater and kettle for the weekend, my toes are like ice! Im on the trots at Noss marina, on the river Dart. So far, as was suggested, my love is keeping me warm, just doesn't stretch to my toes! Run out of snacks to.... Cant wait to get the sails up on this and find a little weather!

Get a coleman dual fuel gives out 200 watt light on 1 fill for 7 hours BUT 3000 watts heat .. Have to keep some ventilation tho !!
PS usefull as a cockpit or anchor light in fog .They also attract fish at night If you fish at anchor

I will second the use of a paraffin pressure lamp to heat a small cabin. I had a Jag 22 and a Tilley and only rarely resorted to running the stove burners.

Currently on my old girl in St Thomas with the temp at a comfortable 75 f in early evening. I do not envy anyone aboard in the UK with the forecast I see on the Beeb. Brrrr

Yes. Warm... but I have a fan heater.

Welcome.

It's currently 0.7 degrees outside and the pressure is dropping like a stone. Probably going to get a bit rubbish later, but no matter, the boat won't rock since she's frozen solid in the marina after a few days of -9.

The only problem here is I've got the boat up for sale and have cleared her out. I forgot to buy dinner, so have just eaten a tin of fruit cocktail and a tin of tuna, using my penknife as a fork.

It's all good though. Just another day in the boaty adventure.

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your new boat.

I am also on board in Portsmouth in shorts and t-shirt... coffee and toasted brioche on the table.. the eberspacher purring away... and ice on the pontoons outside!!! brrrrr..

I hope you stay warm.. and ventilation (even in this cold weather) is the key to keeping dry!

Blimey, what a coincidence!

Im on the trots at Noss marina, on the river Dart.

Hi, my new (well pre-owned) first boat is being surveyed tomorrow and in February I am hopefully moving it to Noss (they reckon they'll be one available from April) in late Feb.

I am both excited and terrified, excited at the prospect of owning our first boat and terrified at realising how much I don't know:confused:.

Look forward to meeting you there, I won't be sleeping on it in the winter though:eek:

Congratulations on the boat, Sailing around your parts is amazing, i'm just round the corner and up the tamar but quite often visit your neck of the woods.

If you get one of those portable gas hobs that use aeresol cans (i know some people don't like them) but they are excellent for heating up the boat and very cheap to run.

Hope you enjoyed your night, i did exactly the same as you on the first night of owning my boat, but it was summer :D
