I\'m on a big trip, been scary today now safe in a harbour

I am on my first long trip from Weymouth to Chatham, stopped in the Hamble last night after negotiating St Albans head, Hurst Point, then today headed East up the channel past Selsey Bill using the Loe channel, then straight across to Beachy Head in lively F4/5 going on 6 seas :-(

I am now safely in Eastbourne's sovereign harbour, preparing for tomorrow's marathon trip via Dover and the treacherous Goodwin sands, past Ramsgate and into the Thames Estuary and the Medway.

If anyone has any advice on this leg it would truly be appreciated as I am being as brave as I can be in my new boat but the weather has been against us. Thanks

But the wind has been in the SW quadrant for yonks, what on earth is there to be scared about?? If the engine even hiccups just hoist your trousers and you'll sail there!

Blimey, piece of cake. no worries tomorrow with wind up your bum - ish. Dungeness next = the place that glows, mind the overfalls there. Dover 1 mile out when passing, up the inside of the goodwin sands through the bouyed channel, cross fairway at ramsgate, north foreland head for port (red buoy) so you keep well out from the Longnose, turn left up thames, through margate road, up to spile buoy, big chimney = sheerness - enter medway.
Enter Thames around 2pm and you should have a nice push up.

Enjoy the trip /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Pete,

Are you going into Ramsgate or straight round the north Foreland?
I have done this trip many times safely, although you should prepare your own waypoints and course I can give you a few waypoints through the Gooodwin sands if you like? but you must plot them and be certain in your own mind that they are correct!
Let me know.

you might not have time, but try to read Riddle of the Sands before you reach Goodwin Sands. To get you in the mood.

Could not sleep last night :-( now left Eastbourne 8am and heading to chatham, bought the channel waypoint guide book, very useful info in it.

Goodwin sands is scaring the pants off me, looks horrendous on the charts. Swmbo is driving, sea only a 3 ish so getting as far as we can, steady 32knts so making good time.

If anything happens, thanks to all for the help over the years :-(

P.S. And I forgive you all for being horrible to me :)

Free drinks for anyone who can make Chatham tonight, that's if I do, F7 showing for Thames Estuary :-(

Your most welcome freddie, see you there.

Just passing Dungeness, odd looking place with loads of pylons. Boat is bl..dy fantastic, powering through everything with swmbo at the driving wheel. Dover and North foreland here we come, oh and Goodwin sands :-(

Coming home, we are coming home, coming home.......... (I hope)

More upates live from the round Britain race soon :)

Big Girls blouse!!!

Stop being so dramatic!

Just get on with it. Anyone would think you are traversing the southern ocean, let alone no more than 5 miles off the coast!

Geeze!!!!

GC1, don't take any notice of them, I'm nailed to my desk today and I am enjoying the in-flight progress reports, keep it up.

Cheers
