I'm just about to commit to Copper Coat!?

One question you need to ask is what happens when it stops working at the end of its life. I had copper coat on my boat which worked okay for about 12 -15 years but it then stopped. What I was told at the time was that it would need to be removed before a new copper coat could be applied. The cost I was quoted 12 years ago was about £5k. I couldn't afford that and so reverted to normal antifouling over the top.

I did ask that and they said just treat it like like the hull of a gro boat.. abrade and apply new. Can't see why you have to remove the old stuff.

Sounds like someone was trying to make some extra money. Providing the first application was done correctly and not peeling or falling off, then just sand clean to key the new coats and apply as normal is my understanding.

That's my understanding, too. It's just the same as if you'd applied something like Gelshield.

Correct. We re did ours in September last year. Sand with 60grit, do any local reapairs from ipmact damage etc then four new coats

Just not logical, abrade and then re-apply.

I wonder if the company suggesting that you needed to remove the old stuff sold painted TV antenna when we changed from B&W?

Previous owner did apply coppercoat himself 5-6 years ago and the boat is on the hard during winter season (in Sweden).
We have only washed it in the autumn and it worked fine (no barnacles) during our 2 years.

What I have issues is with some stainless steel parts on the skeg (supporting the rudder) there the coppercoat doesn't remains.
What preparations are required on stainless steel before applying coppercoat?

The company that did mine used an epoxy metal primer on all exposed metal parts before applying the copper coat. I'm pretty sure it was epoxy based but it was certainly a 2 part mix. Can't remember the name - 9yrs ago. I can find out for you if you like as I'm down at the yard most days and I can ask him what they use now. It may be different now of course as things develop and recommendations change.

I would really love to understand their reasoning behind that advice. After all it is just an epoxy coating with a lot of copper dust in it.

When the first lot failed, they told me to apply another lot straight over the top.

Whilst I do not doubt you if you spoke to them direct I sometimes find it difficult to believe a word these people are reported to have said

Hi, I checked with him today and it seems when they did mine they used an epoxy primer but he couldn't remember what it was exactly but he knows they've always used epoxy primer of one make or another. The latest recommendation from Coppercoat he says, is International Interprotect. This is what they use on all metal prior to coppercoating now and he's happy it works.
