IKEA foam mattress. What are the chances of being able to re-roll?

The foam mattress in our aft cabin has worn pretty thin so this afternoon I’ve popped to ikea to buy a new foam mattress designed for a day bed. This will naturally need a degree of trimming to size to fit our bunk.

Options are trying it in the cramped(in comparison to a new mattress!) aft cabin or doing it at home on the dining room floor where there is plenty of room. Last weekend I took a paper template of the bunk so I’m confident I could do a neater job at home too.

Trouble is, getting it into the car this weekend to take to the boat once it’s out of the vacuum packed, roll up like a sausage, packaging.…..

Do you think it would be manageable for my wife and I to re-roll using ratchet straps……?

Buy a vacuum bag of a suitable size and suck the air out with your hand held Dyson, Shark, Gtech or whatever ;)

You won't get it back down to the size it came from IKEA, but you should be able to get it tight enough to go in the car. I bought (I think) the same mattress for my eldest's bed a couple of weeks ago and it didn't spring up as much as I thought it would, so I don't think it's overly compressed in its packaging (or it takes a while to expand again afterwards). I'd definitely go with cutting it to shape outside the cabin where you've space to work.

I puzzled why with an electric carving knife and fine weather so you can not work outside as to why you want to take home as opposed to cutting on pontoon or coachroof. We installed the sponge like ikea foam in our bow cabin on last boat and cut in situ though having roughly pared down outside. Each to their own but why not leave vacuum packed and take the old mattress home ?

Did you take a template of the whole bunk? We found to our surprise that our apparently symmetrical aft double was in fact very asymmetrical!
