I think Trump has a lot to answer for. Complete and utter fools now completely decry any knowledge, science or expertise.

At the risk of getting political in Scuttlebutt, I think there is a lot of that in many many areas of life. Anti vax conspiracies, moon landings, etc. Then add a healthy dose of refusing to see what people do not want to see and you have an unholy mess.
