I have recently bought an Icom 601 DSC/VHF, mainly because it has a loud hailer facility. The problem I have is finding a suitable loudhailer to mount on the coachroof of my CW Motorsailor. The icom allows you to speak to the foredeckies or quayside through the loudhailor and to hear there replies back via the set. So it is an external horn with a microphone type facility that I need. I can't seem to find one anywhere and Icom don't specifically recommend one. Can anyone help??

Virtually any PA horn will work with this.Avoid the cheapo 5w
things(5.00 ish) and try to get 15/25w item.Pay around 15/20 pounds for semi waterproof one.You will prob need to add bit of thin flex and source 3.5mm plug,as supplied lead never ever long enough.

Thanks for your help. Can you actually hear replies from people on the foredeck back through the set? I am a little confused that an ordinary horn or hailer will do this, or is all the wizadry in the Icom itself which makes this happen?

Hi Andy

I do not know the definitive answer to your question but I would be interested in the answer if it comes up.

I am putting IC-M602's (the international version of the M601) on 2 new build power catamarans I am managing at the moment, and although both vessels have dedicated deck hailers so the hailer function of the M602 will not be used, I am still interested in the full functionality of the radio.

It looks to me that as the connector on the radio for the hailer speaker is only 2 wire (in fact the connector is 3 pin but one is stated to be NC) that it is anticipated that a conventional speaker or horn will act sufficiently like a microphone to work for the response. If a separate microphone was required I would anticipate that the connector on the set would be at least 3 wire. The foregoing is the case with the M602, I expect the M601 is the same but have not checked the manual.

Hello John

Thanks for your reply. I am very much in the dark when it comes to electronics and the like but I get the feeling that this will work with an ordinary fixed marine loudhailer. If it needed anything special I am sure Icom would have said.
So when the weather gets a bit more user friendly I shall fit one and see.
If it doesn't work then at least I shan't be able to hear the 'rich' replies from the scurvy foredeck crew in all their Anglo Saxon glory!!

All the best

Andy
