Icom VHF - hiccup??

Re: Icom VHF - THE CURE

Hi Piers
That is really interesting, thanks. I am not so sure that my problem is low voltage on the batteries. Over the weekend I ran the DC, with fridge, for over 40 hours and could not replicate the problem. Need to try for longer , I know, but thats all the time I had before starting the engine to go do some boating!!
We do not have radar but both times this has happened we have been in marina's "away from home" First time was three years ago in Moody's surrounded by much bigger boats, serious stuff. Second time was in Haslar, not on the visitors but again on a finger and again surrounded by much bigger boats. Perhaps in both cases it was an adjacent boat giving off lots of interference. Crikey, perhaps it was even the same boat. I will try your test and ask an adjacent boat to fire up their radar. Will report more in a few weeks. Next weekend is SIBS for me!

Re: Icom VHF - THE CURE

If interference from electronic things on one's own or nearby boats it is often just on some channels - so if put set onto scanning all channels and it then keeps stopping on the same ones, but not all, as if the squelch is not working on those then almost certainly interference.

Re: Icom VHF - THE CURE

If I can make the dam thing do it again I will try a scan of all channels. We only noticed it on 16 and a few others as it prevented us getting the weather. I will try scanning next time. This last time I did try spinning the knob up 3 or 4 channels and first time it stopped the hiss but then after, say, half a minute it came back. It is so weird. We moored in several places around the Solent in August and it only happened on this one occassion. All suggestions appreciated and will be noted for further investigations!!
