I'm replacing a lot of the equipment on my boat and the vhf will be one of these.
The one on the boat at the mo has the telephone handset type of mike.
I have never used one of these before but now quite like it
Do icom do any radios with these on?
Cheers Rob

I've used a lot of Radios over the years. I am replacing my current Icom with another Icom as I have found the sets to be excellent and intuitive. The staff at the Icoms UK office have been very helpful whilst Jon Brooks unfortunately has moved across to Standard Horizon.
The only down side is that the warranty is not international. If your UK set breaks down whilst abroad you have to send it back to the UK.
On another note Icom make radios and only radios of one form or another. This makes them a specialist in the field and hence they should know their stuff.

That's a bit of a bummer for what I guess is a global brand selling into a very mobile market.

Having said that, when I enquired of Standard Horizon what would happen if I bought their CP1000 plotter and it went wrong somewhere else in Europe - the answer was that it has to go back to the UK.

I thought these days that manufacturers were not allowed to restrict warranties to a single country within the EC and had to offer an EC wide warranty as a minimum.

I should add, I think to be the case but it is not necessarily correct!!

I have an ICOM M802 SSB which suffered with a well known clipping problem. The set was bought in USA and I am presently visiting UK to where I brought the radio for a fix. ICOM UK did this work although I needed to pay for it as ICOM UK is a seperate franchise to ICOM America. It still proved to be cheaper than shipping it to USA from Mexico. ICOM radios can be repaired by any dealer but the warranty stays with the company of purchase.

I would have bought an ICOM VHF too but for warnings by other cruisers about the wham mikes and especially the fittings and pins which seem very flimsy and subject to corrosion. As a result I bought a Unidem DSC VHF with a wireless remote which can be used half a mile away from my boat. It works perfectly and I would happily recommend it to others.

Clipping happens when the radio supresses peaks in the transmission and with the ICOM 820 this supression is very aggressive and sensitive. The result is that the listener hears a Stan Boardman like broadcast with parts of words missing. The fix removes this and the result is a fabulous radio.
