I think I may want a carbon fibre boathook...

Don’t know about carbon, but I bought a 3m GRP boathook off the shelf. It flexes a bit more than the 8’ pine one it replaces, but doesn’t feel like it’s going to break, and it’s nice and light.

Pete

Where did you get it? I need a long one to reach the posts on my box berth. I've lashed one up with a "window cleaning pole" but it's steel and won't last long.

... and I never have much luck with the aluminium alloy collapsible ones.

Nor had I - from the marine industry.

For me, the solution was to look outside the industry. Painters and decorators use aluminium extension poles too, but of much more durable construction.

Heres mine: https://www.screwfix.com/p/harris-trade-extension-pole-medium-1400-2400mm/5679x

or search for ‘decorators extension pole’ or visit a good decorating or builders’ shop.

The end (internal) tube seems to be standard at 25mm diameter, so you can drill out the rivet, slip off the end piece that screws on to a paint roller, slip on a standard plastic boathook end instead, and apply some gorilla glue and a pop rivet or self-tapping screw to secure it. So much more robust than the extensible poles the industry sells, far lighter than wood, and a lot less expensive than carbon fibre.

Also available in wickes for £12.99 I will go and look. Thanks.

At first glance I thought Minn needed it for picking up a mooring from the bow of his new boat ... and was going to suggest a harpoon...

Seems it could be for fending off.... maybe modify a carbon fibre spin pole.... they should be cheap enough.....

I favour getting the mooring buoy alongside the cockpit, Frank!

A propos of boathooks and the business ends thereof, two "Grab-its" from my collection:

The left hand one is an original Leam Engineering model - weight 800gm - as supplied to Sunderland flying boats, to go with their aluminium Baby Blake, their Taylor's Para-Fin two burner cooker and and their CQR, whilst the right hand one is the Davey and Co. yachtsman's version - weight 1.4 kg.

By the way, whilst you are here, could I ask you to drop in to "Liveaboard Link" where you may find an enquiry about Chile...

So the OP has to go & buy a plotter & a fork lift truck to pick up the paper roll, print 2 million fliers then he gets 4 ft of plastic waste pipe for free.

Good tip:ambivalence:

The alternative was to buy a Hallberg Rassy to get the free Aluminium boathook.

I guess the OP could always put the HR on eBay afterwards.

I can make these if anyone is interested...

Carbon Boat Hook.jpg

Max length is 1.94M (overall)... Manufactured with 2mm thick 3k Carbon weave.. (For those racing I can do 1mm thick)... Has stainless pins and end bung... This photo was taken before the joint was sealed with glued DR25 (Heatshrink).. The pole floats so is easily recoverable

Regards

Tim

I've just searched back through my email and - oh the embarrassment - I might have overstated my length a little :D. Turns out it was a 240cm fibreglass pole from Pinnell and Bax.

oooh that's pretty.

I love my classic wooden hook but this is also a great bit of kit

Yes it's a bit more to pay than I would normally, which is why I bought it for my sister and Co owner. I prefer this to the type that threads through and back to the boat because it avoids rope wear.

If you're going to spend almost £100 on a remotely releasable contraption at the end of your pole - let alone if you're also concerned about wear - at least get a metal one.

(Plus £12.99 at Wickes for the pole itself of course. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...a-carbon-fibre-boathook&p=6712015#post6712015)
