Anyways... We are thinking, in fact we probably are going to.... About moving to Woolverstone for a change... Shotley is getting a bit dull... And with the impending building works.... Well.. You know.

Seems like a nice place, good facilites... Etc etc.... I am a bit concerned about how open it is.... Anything else I should be aware of??

Reviews?

Used to be with MDL 15 years ago... Thought they were ok...

Money to burn?
When I inquired about a mooring (couple of years ago) they wanted more for a summer on a mooring than I paid at SYH for summer on a mooring/winter pontoon berth.

Other than that, I would be wary of the tide running through the pontoons.

The quote I have is not far off shotley....

Better still they appear to do a 12 monthly payment gig at almost zilch interest... Which would free up a load of dosh for copper coating.. In fact it would mean spending £2500 less in the next 18 months if we moved...

We've had tidal berths before... Not too big a issue. But it's worth bearing in mind... Are there bits in the place that are worse than others??

That was my thinking just to get away from wash as well... I'll see what they offer..

We had a boat in Woolverstone for a few years about 20 years ago. The tide sluicing through could lead to "interesting" mooring challenges. There was quite a lot of wear on mooring warps too. Today, the pontoons are better, although there seems to be an immense seagull poo problem in parts. It never struck me as a particularly characterful place. I certainly wouldn't go back.

i would say the nearer the shore the better

I have heard the same.

One owner I know moved from Titchmarsh 18 months ago to Woolverstone and went back 6 months later. Was on one of the berths toward the end of the fingers and felt seasick. Also said the relativity recent work had changed the flow through the marina.

Just one view and probably lots of positives.

Was it something I said, or have I been to noisy

I was there until about 3 years ago. Lovely venue - I never found the tide run a real issue, you just need to know what it's doing and generally you can use it to advantage. Only once did I ever really find it a problem (in con junction with a reverse exit from a berth in a string tide / wind combo). The yard staff were always really helpful and although expensive, the 50% discount off yard services they used to offer (don't know if they still do) pretty much sopped up the difference.

However, for me, the 1 hour trek up / down the river every time I wanted to go anywhere other than the Orwell proved a bit limiting as I like to sail on the sea and trips around the region always felt artificially long. I always found the restaurant (Buttermans) a bit soul-less but Shotley doesn't exactly excel in that department atm.

I believe that there have been a number of problems at Woolverstone Marina over the years with damage on boats in the water during winter months. I think it is more exposed than other locations on the Orwell

As an aside, Buttermans now has new owners and is called the Wheelhouse.
We stopped going under the old regime as the food was poor and expensive.
Went back a week or two ago and it was great quality and not too pricey for what you got (not local yacht club prices but restaurant fare).
Around 4-5 choices for starters, mains and dessert with a few specials.
Apparently the chef worked for the Salthouse in Ipswich previously. Good job they didn't bring the prices with them!!

Yeah, we met the guy last time we were in their.... They had just taken over and the menu looked excellent at ok prices... Plus they are gonna do breaky....

This is one of the biggest issues for us at shotley.... The lack of decent food.. And the shipwreck now is just dead. Locally the pubs are rubbish.. It's time for a change and we like the feel at woolverstone... The restaurant has a nice view, nice walks for the dog... Hmmm.. I am a bit worried about wash etc.... But we were in Plymouth for years were the swell would come in through the marina in anything more than a f5 SW....
