I have really enjoyed working on my boat.... But.... Fancy something bigger....

I do love the idea of a plodder, semi displacement. And actually, if it did 12 to 14 knots for a larger boat, that drank a lot less fuel, than has its own appeal.
Decisions decisions

You may love the idea of a plodder but having read your posts I reckon you would be bored witless! Speed = :D although I wouldn't get hung up over 36 or 32 knots, can you really feel 4knots?

Rob,

Suspect you are looking for the holy grail ... more space, equally as fast, similar fuel cost, simplicity of shaft drive... and giving you a challenge.... difficult one that...

Shaft drive usually means more friction, (more noticable the faster you go) so more hp needed to move boat, and downward angle of shaft is not ideal as thrust is not directly in direction of travel....

So if you want shafts, size and speed, you are into surface drive or water jet territory..., but usually that means newer & big = $$$$

How about two curve balls as options ? just to muddle the water :) :) ... both of which are a compromise .... two cabins, flybridge or open, and a unique configuration which combines shaft drive simplicity with surface drive efficiency .... and cruising in the 30 knot range ??

Compromise is that they will be older, Italian and not as sleek as a Sunseeker...

Italcraft made the Aermar 36 and M74 (51ft), which had a unique, efficient drive system in the early to late 80's ... the 36 did nearly 40 knots with 2x300 Aifo

good news is that you can get them "cheap"...

+1 on the Aermar!

was the first boat I looked at before checking a few more Italcrafts and then ending up with another Italian brand...

Alf, problem with Aermar is that it's also a combo construction, grp hull, ply superstructure (like Bart's Canados) and inevitably talking about a deck rebuilt by now (in the fashion I did it on MiToS)
Further Aermar is only 36 ft and the bow cabin is with two single beds wheras the port one is actually a large double with v.restricted height. When I say very I mean VERY!
Lovely looking craft though!

cheers

V.

No, not really, but by pulling the top speed down, so has your cruising speed.

I think i will spend a week off just looking around boatyards. Taking photos and jotting down notes.
I had a look inside a princess (think it was a 410 or 420, and that was lovely inside. Really nice. Loads of room, and loads of storage space too.

Wow the M74 is gorgeous. The Aermar reminds me of your boat Alf. Very stealth-like and I love it from some angles and (no offence intended) not so much from others.

Actually I was driving up a road the other day and I saw the rear hind quarter of a Range Rover Evoque and it reminded me a lot of your boat (from the image beside your name).

How about this for a long term project

I think that is bloody lovely...
Slow, ok about 16 knots...
They are currently working on a new hull design, that will give them an extra30% better fuel efficiency, or more speed for given engine size...
Semi displacement.
Change out of 30k euro for all the steel work,
Long term project...
Statoil let me weld there pipes up occasionally... I reckon i can glue that up :)

Thats a beautiful boat. Fantastic value for a welded hull and superstructure at €60k. What sort of engines would suit?

Guessing twin 370hp for 15 kt cruise?

It says up to 400hundred horse.
But they are getting back to me with more details on this and the fifty footer.
Basically its what ever you want to fit.
Its probably a csae of a battered old lister would still chug it along quite nicely at six knots :)

I really like that. Proper long distance cruising. Room for a scuba compressor, gas cylinders,
Washer and dryer etc etc etc.....

The design reminds me if the VdV aluminium 24 mtr build thread on this forum, but a more manageable size that mere mortals could own. I love the shape of the bow, a miniture super yacht.

I built a 60 ' steel barge from scratch, and i can tell you its lot of work. It took me two summers of 5 months to complete the hull and superstructure. I would buy the ready made hull, and spend a year installing the engines and fitting it out.

Its one of the prettiest designs I've seen.

Please let us know the performance specs when you get them.

PS: a friend of mine bought a second hand truck with 500k miles on the clock, for just £1k. Used it as a farm truck.....good for another 250 k miles apparently. Companies scrap them after a period of time because the Capital write down ceases. Can't remember the hp, i think 250-350hp approx...........hmmmm makes you think!!

I will do, yes
TBH, I looked at these last year before I bought mine. I like a challenge or two
The metal work I think is the easy bit.
I asked if they did it in Ali, but no. Would require a complete redesign of the lower hull shape.
It's the fitting out that would trouble me the most. I get splinters easily ;)

I think going to a boat like that, is more a mobile home, than my boy racer at the moment :)

Research to do....
The site is bonito boats, they are Dutch...

Remember you can move onto the boat once the engine is installed and the floors and windows are in. It means you can sleep 'on site', and get a massive amount of work done.

To own a gorgeous boat like that would be worth all the effort.:)

You can probably order a hull/str that us just tacked together, then its very easy to compete the welding yourself.
If the complete hull is €60k, then a tacked version would be about €45 k???

Wow.. Just looked at a Dutch built vessel in MBM.. Similar size and shape nigh on 400k

They do a few options and designs including fly bridge and a aft cabin version.
I had an email from the architect and pretty much anything is possible.

Stunning ......
I would be sailing around europe

They are mint...
Certainly, you cloggy chaps know how to build them.
An insight I was impressed to see when Merwede shipyard built this one I work on.
And Rotterdam is a bloody good night out :)

Sorry to piss on your parade but:

Completing a bare hull is a lot of work several years in fact if you are working at the same time

A proper paint and insulation job on a steel hull is again a lot of work unless sub contracted out to a suitable blast and spray paint specialist followed by an insulation contractor.

Years ago i looked at a sunken Turbo 36 that had been stripped and I came to the view that with the exception of my own labour I could not by subcontracting labour to fit out a boat do it cheaper than a production line boat builder.

Production line boats go for values well above home built highly customised self builds which rarely recoup the time and cost spent building them.

There are many boats in GRP or steel similar to the Bonito 46 for sale in europe at modest prices my advice would be to look at the best on offer and buy one of those and spend your time improving that boat and fit out to an acceptable level.

Years ago In knew a chap who fitted out a 50ft bare steel trawler hull with a single engine and 15 years ago it cost him in excess of £300k and the boat on the open market would probably sell for well less than half what he spent.

Ah this place is so negative sometime ;)

Thought you would have sussed out my hairbrained ideas when i am locked up in a diving system..
The ramblings of a mad man with an idle mind and a (bad) internet connection....
The last time i was in a shipyard was to build a 22,000 tonne boat, befor that 16000, .. I have a very good idea how they go together, and the resources, time and jobs to do... And more to the point... I am probably just about stupid enough to buy one in the first place :)

Theres a superhawk in ci with surface drives. Apparently its an absolute bitch at slow speed and around the marina. Only coming alive above thirty knots, and really really bad in reverse....
Stunning looking boat

Why is it with boats there's never a hitch free solution to anything.
