I have a dream......

You can stay for 90 days out of 180 . Leaving for 24 hrs does not give you another 90 days
Yes. One of the tips from this forum is from today count backwards over the last 180 days how many were spent in the EU and see how many days of your 90 you have left.
Tragic shame for people wanting to ”live the dream” for a few years in the Med.

Yep, potentially put the kybosh on our plans. Only hope is that SWMBO has an EU country passport and visas may be an option when travelling together. Not clear if it improves the 90 day element though.

Just Googled and found:
Can you get EU citizenship through marriage?
If you marry an EU citizen, you can generally get a residence permit and work toward citizenship via naturalization just like everyone else. Some countries shorten the naturalization timeline for spouses, others do not, but all offer some type of route to citizenship via marriage.

I don’t think a residency give you the right to freedom of the shengen.

Thanks for that. I think to get citizenship we would need to move there for three years and that isn’t really an option.

What I managed to find on EU websites indicated that third country citizens can get free visas quickly if travelling or visiting a spouse who is an EU citizen but it wasn’t clear on how long these can last for - I got the impression that it might be 90 days in 180 under a Schengen visa and we already have that without a visa. Individual countries may allow longer it appears i.e not roaming between countries.

Thanks a lot everyone for a lot to think about!
Hadn't really factored in the Brexit change tbh. I'm sure there are ways to accommodate it, tho it appears one of the best options in Cyprus is soon to become Schengen.
The coming years will clarify to things, but are the multitude of Greek islands really set up to police this? Hypothetical question obviously........

We did what you want to do 15 years ago (but went to Med via Biscay) and had a great time. But we couldn't do it now post-Brexit.
If you decide to work round this, some things to consider:
You say "residential mooring". Be careful, there aren't many official ones. Search the liveaboard forum.
There is mention of a narrow boat - it would be all but impossible for a beginner to sail one over the Channel.
Don't even think of mixing it with local authorities, Greek or otherwise.
Motor boating round Greece not so easy - fuel availability.
Winter weather in Med, especially eastern end, not always balmy.

There is the 'Investment Visa' option in Spain - buy somewhere, or invest E500,000 and you can get a permanent residence with access to the whole Schengen region...

All of the 90 days out of 180 comments only apply if you have a short stay visa.
It is possible to get a long stay visa
Yes but only with exceptional circumstance. I’m thinking extended boat holidays don’t count.
Extension of initial visa-free stay (expiry of the 90-day deadline)
- The length of stay of persons who have entered the country under the visa waiver regime may be extended once by migration office on humanitarian reasons and in exceptional circumstances. The foreigner shall submit an application in person.
