I had an idea!

Lets make scuttlebut burgees!

Then when we see one we know we can talk to those on board! Today when a boat comes in they look about and stay aboard,as many UK flaged boats are not!!

There could be three Burgees: White Red & Blue. as well as defaced.

WHITE: could be for super boats with super owners and defaced if the owner has yaching experience,

RED: For normal members that sail with whatever buget and what ever boat.A scuttelbuter!!

RED defaced: "With 3 stars" members willing to give navigation help;advice to others.

"crossed hammer and chisel" members willing to give advise on wooden boat maintainence and tips!

"An anchor" (fisherman) would be for a member that is mostly in their home port or in the area and is willing to give advice and information about sailing and staying in that area.

BLUE: with a "white anchor" (fisherman) would mean novice sailor looking for advice and training (nav knots sail practice mooring)

BLUE with a "crossed knifes and forks with an empty plate" Would mean a liveaboard thats starveing (often) & would be more than happy to find a packet of flour,bottel of olive oil, tea, milk, vinigar salt and/or Wine!! Someone without great means today!!And very greatful for everything.

BLUE with crossed swordes for those staying put who could offer to keep an eye or look after a boat,this way there would be an idea of whos who!

Next there would be a scuttelbutt VHF & SSB frequency! The VHF could be (for example) CH36 calling times at 9.00am 11.00am & 16.00 am ie visit, apperative and drink befor dinner!!!! Or just hello come over!

SSB could be (i havent looked at my chanells but) 3750 lsb at 9am & 11am or 14320 usb at 9am then 10 am for say 10 mins rig left on listening Again in the evening at 19pm say 3750 & 7070 &14320?

Marine would be 4 or 14 megs the marine frequency along the lines of the others for example 4417,8121 or 13960(i think!!Have to check)

This way we would have something like a crusing club with those that have met online!and can share wi-fi point to post and keepin touch hear

When it gets going we can ask for a section on the forum for contacts with flaged members so as not to overload the scuttlebutt forum!

We could even have net control ers to call into? For ssb local and wide!Almost all of us have an ssb onboard today and those that dont can be helped to find the best with rtty weather and TX with a call!!

When shall we begin this adventure?Burgees diy?or from a dealer ill buy mine to support a member

I believe this discussion goes:

1. Suggest forum burgee
2. Point out existing burgee
3. Complain that its only for mobos
4. Discuss
5. Design new burgee
6. Manufacturer

I think its only every got to 6 once (and we have Haydn to thank for that). Normally stops at 4 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Perhaps a small collaseum in red (Roman forum?) and defaced by the fly prehaps one yard long 6 inches wide? with 45 degree cut out in the fly?

By having a "roman forum" (two elypse joined by lines) it will be forum for both mobos any sailingboats! By defaceing the fly with an anchor(traditional fisherman)can be used by all boats!

The swords again both mobo or sail liveaboards! Perhaps a tower with lightnig forks to denote a SSB controller?

The crossed knifes and forks and empty plate would be for the very worst off liveaboards!!

All burgees would be chosen as prefered to express membership and situation or possition (guide to an area trainer help etc) Burgees could be changed to reflect changed circumstances!

im looking at a small fishing sailing boat with cabin and 60hp ford?? I could become a ditch crawler!! Going through Holland to Poland then down through Romainia to the Black sea?? Great for SSB even though this summer will be the worst propergation period!!

Canals can be very lonly and hard going!!I always hate them untill its f6/7 and im wet cold hungry and a bit afaraid then i want to become a ditch crawler!! Could be fun though!! And good time to do it!!??????Could take years to get to the black sea???Polands quite big and has lots to see and other distractions!

It stikes me that some might be insulted having a fishermans anchor on their burgee. Surely it should be a Delta or something to bring it in line with the feelings of most forum members.

Sounds great! I haven't tried inland in the area, though quite fancy hiring something on the Mazurian lakes, maybe sometime this summer. Which towns does the Romania - Black Sea route go through?

It can only be a traditional fisherman as its universaly known even cartoon and hollywood charactures use the fisherman as do British PUBs cafes and nautical bookshops!

And the traditional fisherman is the only anchor to hold well in heavy weed!!!

Its also clearly an anchor on an image instently recognisable unlike the CQR and Danforth look alikes such as delta----etc

Those with undefaced blue ensigns already fly a burgee and may not have room for another. Mandatory flying of the flag from the backstay would make recognition easier and at a stroke, disenfranchise those without backstays e.g. dinghies, Hunters etc..

How about blue to represent the sea with a mouse drinking from a cocktail glass to show it is computer based and light hearted.
