I don\'t believe it!

Is it normal practice to use black sikaflex to hold together internal joinery .. is this an improvement on the original wood screws ... or did I waste an entire day scraping it all off and fitting it together "properly" after the repair?

Sikaflex is a "good" way of holding stuff together on boats.. Really because boats flex and it stops eveything squeeking... Not sure it's "Good practice" but it seems common place, it was even apparent on the big moody we went on at the SIBS.

Not just by itself , I can understand it if used as a gasket but surely screws etc are required for rigidity?

ahhh, well, you'd be amazed at how many cars have panel held on with the stuff!!!

Next time you get some out, CLEAN two peices of wood and clamp them together with Sikaflex... when you try to seperate them, the wood will normally give up befor the sikaflex!! (oily hardwoods excepted)

Re: I don\'t believe it!

mmm interesting .. surely if that were the case the manufacturers would have used it rather than expending labour costs on screwing it all together?

You're very argumentative tonight young man!

I would think that a couple of screw/plugs to locate etc, then a nice filling of sikky to fill gaps and add a bit of strength. I think that its a good "glue" on a nice flat clean surface, but edges etc would be prone to failure?

What were you doing ripping apart Glen Rosa anyway?? Hasn't she had a tough enough time this year already?

Aha .. there were no locating plgs or screws and it was applied in a thin line across where the screws had been to attach the brackets .. struck me as a lazy man's option to avoid all that screwing!!!

Will surely depend on the type of sikkaflex. for example, I know of at least one boat whose windows are held in entirely with a particular type of sikkaflex and no screws at all! Furthermore, this is as recommended by sikkaflex!

Re: I don\'t believe it!

I know of at least 100% of modern cars whose front and rear screens are held in a similar manner! Look Dad, no screws....
If you use Sikaflex in a joint to allow flexing, then putting screws in to make it rigid again is rather defeating the object, and thus a waste of money/effort.
If you go to the Sikaflex site (or any of the other companies supplying adhesive systems) you will find glue/screw combination recommendations, but the flexibilty (or rigidity) requirement must be taken into account for the design you have in mind.
Also you will find adhesives to match differing materials with porous/non porous jointing etc. The list really is endless, and even after 20 years, I still call in the adhesives bloke to work the best solutions for my design issues, as the business moves on constantly.
I find the help contacts very useful on all the major manufacturers sites.
