Last sunday we had our first experience sailing in the Clyde thanks to Spyro, today we had our second experience further up the Clyde thanks to Pete_Cooper!
We arranged to meet Pete_Cooper at Kip Marine today so as we could see his boat and get his opinion of the different yachts that might be suitable for us.
Pete, met us in the car park and took us down the pontoons, on the way to his boat he stopped to point out several different types of boats that maybe of interest to us. To be honest I can't remember what they all were. there was so many! Eventually we made it too his boat(blimey those pontoons are a mile long!!!).
There she was, Amaranthe is a 26' Ecume de Mer, I know nothing about her, other than i think she's French built.
She's a nice boat, 26' looked small on our Sealine, but this boat and the trapper from last week look so big for 26' boats! Maybe it is the beam, they're so wide!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
No sooner were we aboard when Pete said did we want to go out! Yes great we said. But dam Callum's life jacket is back in the car! Off I trek back along the 5miles of pontoons towards the car park, when this head appears above a cabin door on a boat I'm walking past and says "Hello Alistair!"
With a shocked look, I stop and walk along the finger and meet another forum member. This time I've met this forum member before it was Nordic_Ranger, I've only met Nordic_Ranger the once many years ago when we went to our first boat jumble at Irvine. Good to meet you again Jim.
I eventually got to the car, got the lifejackets and started the 10mile /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif trek back along the pontoons to where Pete's boat is.
After walking the 15miles of pontoons to Pete's boat, I was happy just to have a seat and let Pete do his stuff, there I sat in the same position for the whole sail.
On the way out of the marina Pete was still on form, pointing out many boats that are either for sale or a make and model that might interest us.
We motored out to the entrance of the marina to where a race was taking place, or rather just finishing.
Now I gather its normal for yachts, but they were everywhere, coming and going in all directions, my knowledge of Colregs was right out the window, I was just glad I wasn't helming! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I know pete will say it wasn't that busy, but i will use this line again and say, we've come from the Loch, we don't get that there!!!!
We went round a few boats and Pete spoke to a few people he knew! At this point I remember i had a compact camera in my pocket so took just a couple of pics!

A couple of a new yacht, and Oi! Pete! He's heading straight for us!!!
Then SWMBO took the camera and took one of myself and Callum.
Callum looks as if he's about to fall asleep, but he wasn't, this time I had him on my knees and I wouldn't let him fall asleep, I pointed out a couple of boats to him, and after that, all we got from him was, theres one! and another one! and another one! as he pointed out all the sail boats as he calls them! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
After a while we headed back in and I offered to take the lines ashore, but as we got to Amaranthe's berth, someone else was in it, so Pete had to go round till it was free!
With Amaranthe eventually safely berthed, I was able to take my first look at the Ecume de Mer's cabin.
It was surprisingly functional for a small boat. There was a solid bulk head between the head and the forward berth unlike the Trapper 300. Galley with dual hob and sink to the port with seating round a table to the starboard side with a quarter berth. Like the Trapper this boat is over 30yrs old, but you wouldn't think it, everything still feels so solid.
It is a very good boat, but with Pete's admittance, she does need a little bit of general maintenance over the winter, nothing we couldn't do ourselves.
So in all we've furthered our experience and have a better idea of what we want.
The Ecume de Mer would be a good boat for us to keep our budget under what we'd planned, leaving us money left over for a marina berth rather than a sing mooring. We also saw 2 boats from the outside than looked real possibilities for us, that being a Trapper 500 and a Sadler 25.
So next stop is the used boat show in a fortnights time.
