After following a few links from a 2 stroke diesel site I came across this site. I know what I am going to be doing tomorrow!!/forums/images/icons/cool.gif

As anybody made one of these?

Forget the spudguns! I can tell you how to make a half decent crossbow with an old car or van leafspring

I hadn't heard the term spud gun for 40 years.
Can you still buy them or are they on the dangerous weapons list, oh what fun we used to have, and that smell of starch hmmmm

You can certainly still buy them. The toyshop in East Wittering (by the Co-Op)sometimes has them. Bought one for my daughter. They're now red, whereas I reckon the one I had as a kid was blue. Still good fun for just a couple of quid.

I can offer the following: should you wish to project an uncooked spud weighing about 8oz (that 200+plus grams for you Europhiles) a serious distance using your bare hands read on:

Take a piece of 1/4" dia by about four feet long stainless steel that is sharpish at one end. the other end needs a really good handle fixed to it, for safety attach a wrist strap. Anyway you impale the aforementioned spud at least halfway down the rod. Then if you give it a really violent swipe, and the spud WILL dissapear from your sight. At the age of ten I managed to get one over the entire school hall, followed by a playground and a dining hall behind that. The spud landed in the second playground which was a total of about 180 yards away.

I dont know anything about the one that went through the second window on the left in the dining hall, except that the trajectory was not as planned.

The above is NOT advice merely a bit of my earlier physics and engineering experimentation, and must not be used to cause offence, destruction or annoyance, even of members of the government or traffic wardens. Oh, well alright then.
