Hi I am a new boat owner , old sale boat now a motor cruiser.

I have been told the engine is also a dumper truck engine, does anyone know the name or type of engine

it has a few issues such as black some out exhaust , I want to change the air & oil filter

Welcome to the mad world of boat ownership and welcome to the forum.

I think you will need to provide more details. Have you photos of the engine ?

Is the smoke from first start up, is it still there when the engine has warmed up ?

Lots of possibilities but without engine make and model not much can be offered.

A Lister engine perhaps ?

Single cylinder ?
Air cooled ?

Hatz engines were sometimes used in dumper trucks and similar, and BMW ‘Marinised’ some to become BMW D7 and D12. A clue might be that these use an internal charging system so no external alternator.

I think is fixable I have been advised to

clean hull and propeller
Change air &oil filters
Change engine oil and gearbox oil
Look at water outlet through the exhaust as can get carbon blocked

As others have said, welcome. I think that getting the engine type is quite critical to progress. It's been mentioned that it might be a Hatz, and possibly the BMW derivative. There was also a Renault version, the RC8D Couach, all based on a Hatz E673, thus many parts are available at a good price. Even better, they don't require an oil filter as it's a splash system, and are an OK unit. I had one for some years, only selling it as I needed a 'bit' more power.
All of the advice that you mention is good though, and not tricky. Most important of all is to keep a sense of humour; boats hate that.

Hi I my son in law went to the boat it’s a Yanmar yse8g

What some people do not realise - black smoke from a diesel can in fact be from having prop less than ideal size. Basically loads of fuel going in and load is less than ideal.
My engine smokes at full throttle for that very reason ...

I thought it was a fault - but having had a number of diesel engineers look - that was the conclusion (none of them met any of the others).

Apparently the hull and prop have not been cleaned in several years so hopefully get it out of the water in next six weeks to clean

Doesn't he have black smoke on start up and idle? Don't think he mentioned running up and down the river, so would that negate the prop theory? Apologies if I've missed something, but my first port of call would be all filters and oil change.
