I´ve fired myself!

I went in to my boss today, told him that I´m will be out sailing for 18 months from first of May.
When he said "You can not do that", I said;
"Well, I have to quit work then!"

So no employment when I´m back, but a dream coming true!
And it´s a long time before November 2005!

Well done - there will be no looking back.

I've just done the same - my last day in the office tomorrow and it feels great! I've still got loads to do, refitting the boat, so will be working full time on that. We plan to sea trial this season and the final 'big off' next spring (05) and have no intention to come back.

Enjoy - I think its a great thing to do!

I've got to ask this question - altho' it's a bit upfront - but how much cash do you guys have stashed before you sail away? £50k, £250k, £500K? Do you completely sever your UK links (house gone etc) and simply live off capital? I think, to go off with some "comfort", I'd want the boat completely paid for (of course) + at least £250k in the bank. Am I way off the mark?

My boat is paid for, last year sold the house and purchased a couple of flats outright. Give me a rental income of 12000 a year. Will have around 100K in ready funds.
I've done my sums and it all seems to work out. I'm just working out my last contract before setting off. Intend to spend at least 10 years sailing around the world.
My wife was a bit aprehensive at first but since we bought the Nic and she has a few thousand seamiles under her she is the main driving force for us to disappear into the blue yonder.
It all depends on how extravagant a life style you have. If you stay in up market marinas and eat out, intend to fly back regularly then maybe you will need more.
Any thing is possible.

Stashed funds.

We´ll be away for 18 months. During this period our house will be rented out, so we will not have any costs at shore. The boat is paid for and our budget for 18 months is the equivalent of £ 23.000. This must cover fuel, food, harbour fees and normal maintenance, but not charts, pilots, and emergency repairs. Mostly we will be two on board, and in case friends and relatives will join they will share the daily costs.

This is almost exactly what we have done. Instead of buying 2 rental properties though, we have invested in one property and the other capital put into low risk investments to give us £12k of annual income. Will also then have an amount of cash reserves.

We decided to go for an older boat and refit rather than a new(er) bluewater standard yacht as this meant we would have more investment capital for generating an income.

Can’t wait to go now.

Nigel- If your leaving ’05 season we will probably bump (not literally) into you going south. Look out for a Warrior 35 called ‘Hitrapia’.

We also bought an old boat and have refitted. Well will have finished by March.
Overall costs are about 80K that's purchase and re-fit....every thing from sails to to electronics. My missus is re-upholstering and varnishing to keep it within our budget. I would have to pay in excess of 200K to buy new to the same standard.
Having lost a pension due to robbing insurance companies (got it back via the ombudsman) I just do not trust so called investments. Rather have property in the right location (Westbourne in Bournemouth) and money in my offshore high (huh) interest accounts.
Luckily my son has just changed jobs and is now living in Bournemouth so he will manage the flats for us while we are away.

Our sail away date is August 28th '05 unless this contract pisses me off in which case it will be sooner. I'm not adverse to speaking my mind nowadays knowing that I can leave at any time but the buggers are aware so treat me very well. Boats name Shearwater of Dee.
I'll keep a weather eye out for you.

Total agree. I will hope to finish the refit by April. As yourself, will end up with an almost new boat, except hull and spars for circa £75k. IMHO a much better way to do it than buying new. Also a great way to know ever inch of the boat if you do most of the work yourself.

Know what you mean about ‘investments’, but the buy-to-rent market where I am is fairly saturated at the moment, so have split the risk and gone for bonds as I’m only looking to beat the interest I’d get from saving accounts. Fairly low risk.
