I'm thinking of fitting Hydrovane Self Steering because there's no lines running into the cockpit. Would probably mount it just off centre to keep clear of my transom boarding ladder. Anyone use one? Any problems?
Many thanks, Tim

Ours is mounted about 6" off centre and no problems. As long as the rudder stays fully immersed when heeled I don't see a problem. we have only had it for a season, but have done a number of passages in a variety of conditions and been really impressed. It took a bit of playing with at 1st to work out which settings to use for what conditions, only minor irritation I can forsee with a centre cockpit is whilst you have no lines running everywhere and the course is adjustable remotely, you would have to go to the transom to adjust the settings and put it in and out of operating mode.

Regards

Steve

I am about to remove a hydravane from my new to me boat because as a matter of preference I prefer the Monitor which is on my old boat.

Are you interested in my Hydrovane

We used a Hydrovane on an extensive cruise about 12 years ago---Croabh Haven to Tenerife and back. It does take a little getting used to but having control string/rope leading back into your central cockpit makes it safer to operate in poor conditions.

Every item onboard your own yacht comes down to personel preferences and if you get chance go and have a sail with yachts with different makes of self steering. If not possible then walk around your local marina and imagine how the different types would fit on your yacht.

We fitted the Hydrovane ourselves and basically if you have the confidence to tackle the job it should take just over a day, that's if its not raining!!!!!! We did however, have to remove the boarding ladder.

Good luck

David

Mine was mounted just one side of the boarding ladder. Travelled 1000's of miles - absolutely no problem. Had the remote control line led fwd adjacent to centre cockpit - very useful.

Hope this helps
