Hello,

at first sorry for my bad english. I'm searching for damegd sailing boats over 30 ft. Do anybody know some links, where i can found hurricane damaged boats.

Also the boat must be tranfer to germany. What dou you think how expensive will the shipping with a container ship from USA to germany?

Best regards

Sebastian Krüger

Let me get this straight.

While people are at home desperately trying to get news about the condition of their pride and joy, scared they are going to loose everything.

You want to cash in on this desperation and buy a damaged boat. Do you jump up and down with glee when someones home is repossessed as you might get a cheap house at auction.

Why not stand on the coast with a burning torch and lure the boats into the rocks.

Unbelievable, how do I leave the human race!

Sorry but I don't agree. The people will have received the insurance money for their loss. If they are still sentimentally attached to their boat - which often isn't the case when it's been severely damaged - they also can offer to buy it back from the insurance company at a knock-down price and then work to restore it.

If they don't want to buy it back, what should prevent people like Sebastian from trying?

Ah, Sebastien. I think you made the mistake of expecting sensible advise on this forum.

Whereas, in fact, most of us are mad.

I'm not. So consider. You are planning to buy a damaged boat. Without expensive surveying you will have no idea how seriously damaged it is. You are planning to ship it back to Europe as deck cargo on a container ship, so that the damage may get worse. Also transoceanic shipping of large items like yachts doesn't come cheap. You then have a damaged yacht in Europe where labour rates are high. You also have a boat that very probably doesn't comply with the European Recreational Craft Directive, so has to be made to conform (expensive) or it can't be used or sold here.

Is this rational behaviour?

Thanks for your help.
Yes you are right. But it is possible that i will isnpect the boat berfore i will buy it. What do you think how expensive will the shipping be? How much do you think will cost it to repair it in the USA. I know it is hard to say it because its different, becaue the damage of every boat is different. But around for this boat http://www.yachtsalvage.com/Listings/A004.htm
A similiar Boat in Germany without damage will coast ca. 150.000$, so it think it will be a good solution to get it to germany and repair it on my own.

Best regards
Sebastian

There are plenty of good Hunter 33 listed for sale in USA at around 50,000 euros. Search on ybw.com > buying a boat

Shipping might well cost 10,000 euros.

You must also make the boat comply with the RCD which might well cost another 7000 euros over and above the repair costs.

I would repair it on my own and that wouldn't be so expensive
I think to repair it on my own will cost 5000€ if the boat coast 4000€ and then the transport 4000€(i hope it will be enough) then the boat will coast 13000€

Hi Seb, dont forget VAT payable at EU port of entry!! regarding RCD see article in yachting monthly October although getting the spec for this age of yacht should not be a problem, two options is to have it repaird in the US but vat will be higher in EU estimated value at entry port, but sail it back yourself. import it as a wreck vat would be lower but there may be import duties this way as well as vat, this is applied in the UK but I dont know how this works in Germany!

Regards and good luck

Fair comment except that Sebastian's timing is somewhat insensitive.

Ivan has only just passed, and Jeanne is now doing her thing. Its rather unlikely that many people will been able to assess the damage, let alone receive settlement from the insurance.

You don't need to go so far to find at boat you can fix up. Take a look at this page, they are almost all for free...

Re: Hurricane damaged boats and transport to germa

I think perhaps your expectations are a little unrealistic on this boat.
They have the same boat on offer on Yachtworld.com for 28000 dollars...even if they get half of that it,s still going to go for 14000.
I'ts going to require new spars since the originals were broken off. That means new rigging...standing as well as running.
New sails.
The motor is an unknown.
The electronics are probably iffy as well.
God knows what other damage there is as a result of whatever caused the mast to be lost.
Consider that you can purchase a used boat of the same or similar model and vintage, ready to sail, for less than 40000 dollars.
Unless you really want an excuse for a trip to Florida to check out this boat I'd suggest you look closer to home.

Yes, it's Swedish. Most of the boats are in the Stockholm area. There is not central phone number, you would have to contact the marina/owner in every single case. The website just collects info about abandoned boats people send to them.

I am not aware of other similar sites, sorry.
