I have just received a condition report on a Hurley 24/70 on which I have made a "subject to survey" offer. The survey comes up with a lot of recommendations, some cosmetic, some more significant, but one that sounds like it maight be a lot of work "The mast should be unstepped and a bracket made so as this supports the mast heel fitting and this bracket should be fastened to a reinforced part of the fore and aft bulkhead." Have any Hurley owners had a similar bracket made, and if so, I'd appreciate some idea of what is involved.

Thanks

Had a Hurley 24/70 for ten years. Lovely boats.

There was a problem with some of the mid production run boats - the builders tried cutting back on materials in the layup of the coachroof. As a result, when you tightened the rigging, the coachroof deflected downwards until the heads door jammed solid. I cured this mainly by beefing up the main bulkhead, which is just forward of the mast step. I was able to cure the problem - and incidentally transform the windward performance.

There is a Hurley Owners Association, who were in touch with Iain Anderson, the designer of the Hurley range. The contact for the Association was John Udy (phone 01392 490939, email hurleyowners@freeuk.com). The Association, and/or Iain Anderson will be able to give you more info, or send me a PM if you want more details of my mods.

I had an Atlanta 25 (later model 24/70) which had been modified by one of the interior bulkheads being removed (bent surveyor "missed" the mod!). The mast step failed in a squall and the mast nearly came through into the cabin (and beyond). After a mammoth battle with the insurers they paid out, their surveyor said this was a known problem with the unmodified 24/70. My fix was to have a compression post fitted, other owners have had the coach roof strengthened inside.
