With respect, taking a shot at a moving animal with a rife is a no no. The only time that you do is if its in flight and your using a shot gun for a bird or small ground game, NOT the likes of foxes.

I can understand peoples point of views, even respect them but reading some of these posts people are trying to comment and tell others the mechanics of fieldsports they know nowt about. hmm that rings a bell somewhere.
But keep it up chaps its good seeing people go round in circles.

What a fantastic debate. Do our MP's read what's on these fora?

I've lived in the country all my life, and whilst I've never had any real interest in anything remotely "horsey", I have shot & fished (not any more though).

I feel that we should let people enjoy themselves anyway they can as long as it's NOT downright antisocial AND/OR purposefully cruel.

Undeniably. That's entirely where my reservation lies. girlfriday's post above is interesting - "The utilitarian philosopher John Stuart Mill had an idea that there were 'higher' and 'lower' pleasures and that we should cultivate the 'higher' ones" - that's pretty much where I'm coming from. You may be right about shooting but I will need some convincing that the most efficient method to be found of controlling the fox population is by chasing them on horseback.

As far as the 'toffs' angle is concerned, it's of no interest to me what 'class' hunting participants fall in. However, although you may cite the odd exception, it is surely indisputable that hunting was historically (not exclusively perhaps) the preserve of landowners = rich = powerful. Mere tenant farmers would never have been able to afford the cost of keeping hounds etc. Therefore, it seems highly probable that any parallel that may have been drawn between hunting and (say) cockfighting would have been pretty quickly squashed anyway.

I can inmagine a far shorter version of your pros and cons, but it's a brave ttempt, right?

Be carefull with the tourist attraction part within the barbaric ritual of fox hunting, I don't think you might win additional tourists (outside UK) with this one. Love spending (and have done quite often) spending my euros in the Countryside, either in Englad, Wales, Ireland or Scotland. Love your pubs, traditional tea time and such, but I'll be buggered to spent anything knowing that kind of traditions are going on in the area. Seems to be a majority view if you do some research on line and are able to read Dutch, German and French.

Ah right, your castles, ruines and general history are the real tourist traps. Can't resist them! Never bothered too much about churches, but that's just my opinion and way off topic......

Er agreed - but it happens doesn't it? - witness that 13 year old boy who got shot in Devon last week whilst out lamping (for foxes) or the "marksman" during the Foot & Mouth crisis who was chasing around a field after sheep firing at them with a revolver (within 100yards of a highway). If shooting becomes the normal method of control, "best practice" isn't necessarily going to be applied is it?

I agree the argument is going round in circles but that's the whole point - unless you've got a v.strong argument for banning something, you shouldn't legislate, and from the point of view of animal welfare, there is no strong argument, just a lot of prejudice against "toffs" and hypocritical cant about "cruelty" from wooly-minded carnivores.

Beagle - I doubt the French will be put off by hunting - their hunting lobby is the strongest and most politically-influential in Europe - the French attitude to wildlife is - that's a handsome animal, what's it taste like?

I just thought of a great new sport which I believe I have a right to participate in. Here it is, I get all those inbred, moronic country folk who get a thrill out of chasing an animal to exhaustion then watch it to be ripped apart by a pack of dogs, put them on a disused airfield and chase after them in my car and run the twats over one by one. I think this is a bridge too far. Often when the family pet, cat or dog, is approaching 10 yo it starts to become a financial burden and really ceases whatever useful contribution it has made to the general household. So a really useful way of recycling these geriatric pets would be to let the hunt chase them. What do you think?

The anti-hunting mob are cruel to foxes. By stopping hunting many more foxes will be shot, wounded and left to die a horrible, slow death in agony.

Or they will be poisoned, which will catch other wild animals.

Or they will be trapped and die slowly, held down by a wire.

At least with hunting the fox is either killed swiftly or gets clean away.

Let's be clear, this Bill is the result of envy of those who get a purposeful ride across the countryside.

It will result in the death of hundreds of hounds and horses in their prime of life - if that is not cruel what is?

By the way, I do not hunt but believe in individual freedom, not the nanny PC State. What the hell were the Gestapo doing using their batons on peoples' heads? Anyone who was injured in this way should have the right to sue for massive compensation. This was BRUTALITY of the worst kind!

Why stop at the family pet? How about the family OAP!! I know granny with her zimmer frame isn't going to put up much of a fight but hey!! Don't think the blood lust group will mind. It's all in a days "sport".

"This was BRUTALITY of the worst kind!" What complete twaddle. The police were behind barriers. The animal loving country alliance THUGS were pulling down the barriers trying to get at the Police. Maybe cracking a few more skulls might have knocked some sense into them. Anyway aren't the Police allowed to enjoy blood sports?

A little bit of tolerance of both sides would have resolved this issue years ago but both sides seem to be determined to waste good parliamentary time when there for more important issues to be debated.
