Hunting Ban & Sailing

"Do the hunting side class it as a sport ?"

Not sure what they class it as but on Sky News this lunchtime they had one of the hunt organisers saying "There is no way we will let the government destroy our livelihood blah blah blah..... Why should the government be allowed to stop our ENJOYMENT"

Tosser said it all....

Mark,

One man's cruelty is another mans sport. Whilst some may find fox hunting pointlessly cruel, others don't.

Some find putting a hook through a living maggot or worm just to catch a fish cruel, others don't.

Some found bringing the country to it's knees by three day weeks and blackouts unreasonable, others didn't. Some found printworkers being paid a high wage by newspapers whilst not even being present and working on the side unreasonable, others didn't. Some found those that violently tried to prevent others from working, when they didn't want to, unreasonable, others didn't

You are neither liberal nor a civil libertarian if you pick and choose your freedoms to allow or restrict, you are merely someone wishing to impose your own ideals upon others.

If you support the right of one man to threaten another man for being prepared to work for less than him in the name of freedom then this freedom should also extend to anothers right to hunt a fox?

Both positions seem ridiculous to me as the rights being claimed by organised labour went way beyond basic right and civil liberty. By all means have an opinion, but don't try and dress it up in the name of liberty as one mans freedom is another's restriction.

<squadrons pheasants armed with machine guns mounted under their wings diving on the rows of 12 bore wielding 'guns'>

I worked on a ad campaign a few years ago for Woodpecker Cider which did just that - squadron of Ducks fitted with machine guns diving on pot shotters sitting in a rowing boat. All set to the dambusters theme. Brilliant. Another had a whale turning on a Japanese whaling ship but for some reason I dont think that one got past the ASA!

Erm . . .

Personally I couldn't give a toss whether hunting is banned or not, and I think the govt. wishes it had never started this nonsense.

However, I feel compelled to point out that ripping a live animal to shreds is a pretty small part of the average hunt. There's lots more dressing up in silly clothes and galloping excitingly around the countryside trampling the vegetation and making a lot of noise.

Also, getting ripped to pieces by another animal is a pretty natural way for many animals to die.

You wouldn't like it, some folks think it is an AWB!

I'm thinking of taking up smoking again, turning to drink and even eating Big Macs and fries with loads of salt - why? That way my useless pension will not need to last as long....

If you truly feel motivated to protect animals you should focus on those aspects of UK life that cause mass animal suffering. Start with factory farming, roadside kills and pet owners. These 3 issues dwarf the fox hunting problem by a factor of 10,000 at least.

I suspect you actually want to encourage a form of politically correct ethnic cleansing.

Re: Smoked Fish

As a non dog owner I could also argue that it is cruel to keep a dog, or any pet for that matter imprisoned in a household.

It's true, he's not wrong.

But I don't want to leave, I have it so good here I am a pampered puppy, I even get milk now and then.

>I suspect you actually want to encourage a form of politically correct ethnic >cleansing.

The association of the hunting debate with the extermination of the jews, the fall of communism and ethnic cleansing quite sickening, and as such any references to higher causes invalidate any arguments made.

We're talking about a supposed *sport*, nothing else.

Very Very True, but not an easy target nor vote catcher for any govt. so no action likely.

I'm no fan of foxhunting because of the pompous attitude and ignorant behaviour of many who ride to hounds. The ripping apart of foxes is/was actually rare but is also obviously barbaric and should not be allowed to happen.

BUT now that it is proven that fish can feel pain, should not the same rules apply to some types of angling? Large fish can be "played" for hours - this is no more sporting than hunting and in fact the fox has a far better chance of elluding capture than do the fish that are kept in a lake. Game shooting is similarly "immoral".

As a teenager I occasionally followed the hounds and fished and did both rough and game shooting for many years after that, so I am hardly virtuous here.

There is absolutely no chance of Coarse Fishing being banned though I think that Game Shooting may come under pressure. This will only be because it is perceived, incorrectly, to be followed by a similar "class" of person as supported hunting. The barbarity factor will be a convenient add-on excuse for action.

The saddest thing of all is the huge amount of Parliamentary time and money was spent on this minor subject. There are so many far more important matters that could have been dealt with that actually deal with the welfare of our "brother" human beings.

Mmm, sorry, this is rather more serious than I intended. Where's my medication ?

Try not watching the TV (or at least the news), stop buying newspapers and buy more boating mags. You'll be surprised how much better life is.

Re: Let\'s be definitive, how about genocide?

> We're talking about a supposed *sport*, nothing else.

You make it sound as though the Government has simply banned rural people from booking games of squash at the local shorts hall, it runs far deeper than this.

One official criterion for Genocide as defined by the UN in 1948 includes:

"Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

I think many rural people feel this is what they are being subjected to particularly when the issue is linked with other attacks from urban based liberalism such as:

* Injury compensation culture that is rendering many horse riding schools uneconomic to run.

* Misguided food safty laws that prevent country folk from preparing their produce for market and instead force them to use industrial scale food processing plants.

* Planning laws that encourage near monopoly on the retailing of food.

* Finally they face the criminal brownshirts and storm troopers financed by the liberal State who crawl out of their housing estates each night and plunder while those in law enforcement sit at desks filling out forms for lawyers, social workers and business process engineers.
