Fish have to be a bit slow to be hit by a piledriver I would have thought..... Or are they worried the fish will swim into the piles and suffer concussion?
Why horse racing in general? I can see that steeplechasing might get some unwelcome attention - I never watch the Grand National, because I don't take much pleasure in watching beautiful animals get their necks broken - but as with fishing, it's a sport that attracts millions, and supports a large part of the UK gaming industry, so I'd have thought it's safe as houses. Mind you, the way some houses are built nowadays............

At the risk of giving a serious answer to this. The reason that they are concerned is because there is a view that the noise of the operation will put off the migratory sea trout during their, er, migrations. They had the same edict on Lymington River last year.

Good poem that
Just one thing though
If we had a government who wished to push through a number of
marginally acceptable policies........
"Divide and Conquer" comes to mind
Having lived in Canada and watched bloody great big bears eating them I don't think Salmon could be discouraged from returning to their spawning ground by anything! Apart from "piscine supositories" that is..... That might do it......
Depends how you fish. Fishing with dynamite or emptying cement powder into the water is already illegal. Suppose if you trained a pack of killer cats to leap into the water and rip to pieces unsuspecting fish then that might be outlawed as well.
Clive, I can certainly see National Hunt racing becoming a target.
As a non dog owner I could also argue that it is cruel to keep a dog, or any pet for that matter imprisoned in a household.
These things may seem ridiculous today but one day they will be stark realities.
50 years ago smoking was considered cool and no-one would have thought it would get banned. Crash helmets on bikes were for poofs and seat belts in cars were an optional extra. Homosexuality resulted in a jail sentence and colour bars were the norm.
Things change, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, but just as some freedoms are granted to those that had none, others are taken away from those that do.
<I think it is hardly fair that Gay Rights & Apartheid be bracketed with miners, printers and steel workers.>
The issue at the time was that the PM had made it her personal mission to deny the right of organised labour to protest. She thereby moved to undermine what was widely regarded amongst more liberal thinkers as a basic right & civil liberty. Where were the wingeing huntsmen when the chips were down then?
This is my point, the moment the tables were turned the predominantly Conservative Countryside Alliance appear to have been afflicted with an overwhelming bout of selective amnesia and then have the barefaced cheek to resort to the rhetoric of oppression.
You dont have to be gay to support gay rights nor black to fight racism but IMHO you do have to be just as twisted as the huntsmen to support their right to 'enjoy' the spectacle of a salivating pack of dogs shredding small animals on a day out in the woods - be they vermin or not (fox's that is!)
Oh well, s'pose I'd better do some work now, rant over!
I agree with much of what you say - except that is with your use of the word sport. I think it would only be a sport if the foxes could somehow be organised into packs as large as those of the hounds, turn on their pursuers and have a darned good scrap. You could even lay a bet or two.
I have another dream of squadrons pheasants armed with machine guns mounted under their wings diving on the rows of 12 bore wielding 'guns'. Now, that would be sport.
