I'm buying a Hunter 23' and would welcome guidance on what outboard can be fitted to these boats.

I'm not seeking to fit a diesel - but wonder whether a Mariner 8 or perhaps the Mariner 6 (2 cylinder model) can be fitted. I'd welcome a 4 stroke but then.....

There appears limited room in the locker - and some idea of what will do for the best - short of trying various models would be a great help.

You wont believe me but a 4hp is big enough to reach hull speed I had a duette for years my recomendation is get a 4 stroke if you can use half as much fuel no mixing and quieter get a high thrust prop and make sure has charging coil. a 5 gal tank will get you 16 hours flat out enough to go accross channel

What engine did you have in Duette and what did you think of the boat overall?? I'm thinking of buying one.

Re: hunter duette

i had several sonatas (single keel duette) they were fine with 4 & 5 hp motors (mariner long shaft). any more would be overkill.

had a hunter 26 with an outboard in the locker. it was an excellent boat, but i was glad to replace the o/b with a diesel. the off centre installation of the o/b was only good on one tack if you were trying to motor sail hard on a stiff breeze.

5HP sounds about right but it depends on how you use the boat. As a guide, I have a Hunter Delta 25 (twin keel)which displaces about 4200 lbs (Hunter 23 about 2800 lbs from memory) and have a Mariner 8 Sailmate (2 stroke) fitted. Hunters originally recommended a 5HP for the Delta which would be OK for the racing fraternity to get to and from the start line (and it raises and tilts when sailing to reduce drag)but hardly adequate for cruising. In smooth water we can reach hull speed with the 8HP but there's little in reserve for bashing into heavy seas. When we bought the boat there was a Yamaha 10HP 4 stroke fitted which coped with most conditions but it was very heavy, could not be raised out of the well without removing the prop and had to be used without its cover in order for us to shut the cockpit locker lid. This led to corrosion problems and potentially expensive repairs. It was, however, very smooth and economical.
The Mariner Sailmate has the high reverse thrust prop which improves the stopping power. It is also a manual start which I prefer to the electric start of the Yamaha as our battery power is limited. It has a nominal 6 amp charging coil but I find that this is barely adequate with the amount of motoring that we do especially if using nav lights etc.
