For the interested few, ABP have launched a new web site:

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.humber.com>http://www.humber.com</A>

It seems full of useful info on the Humber, inc. tidal data and even pdf charts (a bit low res unfortunately!). Plus you can download all the notices to mariners etc., and it give details of marinas and some havens.

BTW Ian,

Thanks for the advice re friges and gas bottles on the ouse.

We saw the fridge minus its door, as you said, loads of tyres and gas bottles of all shapes and sizes.

The worst problem was tree trunks and branches. On the return leg, a cruiser slowed down to warn us about one bad spot where a few trunks had joined together and were almost spanning the river leaving no way round.

I briefly chatted to the controller on Cawood bridge as we passed under about the problem. He blamed it on the farmers. But what are the rivers people doing about it?

You get a bit of the stuff on the Trent, but nothing like the Ouse, no wonder few cruisers seem to venture South of Naburn.

(I did post some photos of the trip a week ago, post was called 'Computer Dating - stood up!', not a very relevant title so you may have missed it!)

The problem seams to be getting worse, last sunday I had a trip down from Naburn to Selby Lock in a narrow boat which was quiet interesting, but at the slow speed I saw the river in a differant way again, there is all the stuff on the top of the water but the amount a large size logs which just bobbed up and down near the surface of the water which you would not see on a cruiser were quiet scary.
I came down on friday last week on a cruiser which had the props fouled twice just before cawood.
I have 2 sets of props which I rotate, the mainly last for 3 to 4 Hull trips there and back then they are quiet out of shape and have a few bits missing, but its one hell of a adventure

Regards

ian

Where do you think this rubbish comes from?. I would have thought that the weir at Naburn would have filtered out a lot of the big stuff and the area downstream of this towards Cawood is pretty flat and empty.

I live in the village on the opposite bank to Naburn and the rubbish we see in the river is disgusting the boats moored on the river bank often collect huge amounts of the stuff trapped between the hull and the riverbank and some of it must be doing damage

Don't know who you river users pay your licence fees too but you ought to be making more noise. I believe there is a Motor Cruiser club in York who perhaps should be doing something about this. Are there any members on the forum?

British Waterways say they dredge the rubbish out in winter, but who knows where the stuff comes from in summer.
The banks of the river from York upwards towards Linton are full of fallen trees and stuff on them all above the normal water level, but this all comes down as soon as there is a flood, but to be honest I have never seen the ouse this bad before.
Mite get myself a narrow boat with a log burning stove to live on in winter and do abit of clearing myself

I came down from York last week also never seen the Ouse so bad in twenty odd years of cruising on it. Also had to drop everything to get under Cawood Bridge, which is still out of action a week later! Thankyou Pedro! Also heard on the grapevine that the EA and English Nature are knocking their heads together to open the lock at the R. Derwent permanently.Total disaster all the silted waters of the Ouse will go up the Derwent.Understand they are putting in a new pipe line so will not need the clean waters of the Derwent for drinking. The Ouse is a total mess the river is less than half its width in places becos, of overgrown willows no wonder York floods! Pity the mayor of York cannot have a trip from Selby to York to see the state of it. Nedmin
