Hi all, I guess we'll call Hull on the East Coast, but I don't see anyone from here on the list?

Isn't there any other Hull people on ybw? Just saying hi if there is. I've just bought a boat on the marina so looking forward to taking her out this weekend for the first time!

I started my yachting career on the Humber, at about the age of 9. My dad's boat was based at South Ferriby. The one thing I'd say is that you cannot make progress against the tide. So all outings are go out, go with the tide until it turns and then back. Off Hull, the tide runs at about 6 knots, or thereabouts. The other thing I'd say is, don't rely on a Chartplotter - it will inevitably be out of date. The navigable channel can change very quickly; the Humber Conservancy (or whatever it is these days) have a full time job keeping the buoys in the right place to mark the channel. Navigate using the buoys, not any electronic chart.

If this is your first boat, you've chosen a particularly difficult stretch of water to start on. But we did the same, and I'm still here!

PS. I wouldn't go back there!

I'm a regular on the estuary but nearer the Spurn Point end. There's a post on this forum from May this year with a link to ABP Humber website which has advice for recreational sailors. The site is good for real time tide heights and weather. Watch the cross-tide when you return to Hull Marina and beware the Hessle Whelps!

I'd post the same in Scuttlebutt. There are some Humber forumites, but probably don't mix with them southern Jessies.

We went to Hull last week and found it excellent. Had a problem with a leaking Jabsco seawater pump. Unfortunately no one was available who could help us as the local engineer was away. However we dismantled the pump, both bearings and seal were knackered, found a local bearing supplier 10 minutes walk away, got bearings and a new seal. They also suggested a local garage who could dismantle and fit the new bearings, they couldn't but suggested another garage who could(Chris's Cars) who sorted it for a very modest cost. Well done Hull! Fitted the pump and working well. (Apart from a couple of miles from the marina when the engine stopped, discovered the water hose from pump had detached itself from the heat exchanger and water had got into the air filter, refitted the hose, engine started ok and we continued)

George Lodge? Amazing stock and going back so many years.

I lived in Barrow for 12 years, but preferred three hours each way to the Blackwater in the car to berthing in Barrow Haven. I did have one foray out of Winteringham in my newly acquired dory, only to run out of fuel before South Ferriby, amazed at how much fuel a 25HP two stroke guzzled above hull speed ......

This is the middle at half tide mid river off Sth Ferriby from earlier this year, would not like to be on the edge of this

From Hull really good day sail to spurn head, anchor for a few hours and return on flood time, about 3 hours each way and fun doing 8-9 knots over ground on way back with no wind

I'm from ull boat is in essex (I only live about 15min from the marina and is too close to home - I prefer to have the get away for the weekend) if you are looking for another boater try "Cruising Ava Grace" on youtube - Dave is a pleasant chap and has his boat in the Marina.

I've got my boat at the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Yacht Club at Grimsby's Royal Dock. I've been sailing in the Humber for the last 25 years and visited all the havens over the years.

The Humber is an interesting river and very pretty once past the bridge. I've been in to Hull many times and always find the staff helpful. I would recommend a trip to South Ferriby, the pub is expansive but sells great food. Goole is very much worth a visit too!

You can download & print FOC the latest charts from here Chart Viewer - ABP Humber

Past the bridge in particular is always changing but its not difficult if you pay attention. In 25 years I've only touched the bottom once!

I think it’s the same place but we worked out of there for several weeks years ago.

Great friendly club. Spent many a night in there and put a few £ over the bar!
