Hi
I am endeavouring to have my Ruffian 23 classified as small boat classic status ( being now 50 years old and manufactured in uk) to help with trying to secure cheaper berthing fees. Ive registered with the nsbr and national maritime museum.
Any ideas?
Billy

Classic is such a hugely flexible term applied to many deserving boats and many undeserving - I would be amazed if anybody would discount berthing fees because you have a "classic"

Sorry, it is just another old boat like thousands of others. AFAIK the only "registers" are for "historic" ships. Maybe you are confusing boats with cars where there is a classic status based on age for tax and MOT purposes.

There are a number of Classic Yacht Registers one being UK based and several others international albeit with UK entry listings.
We used to be members of this one but it wasn't really any use for mooring discounts other than at their own Rally attendances (Brest / Douarnenez etc.)

In conversation with a 'classic' owner about moving it down here from UK.. Quite likely he would get a reduced fee for the berth as it would enhance the 'look' of the recently expanded port.

The ruffian 23 was a racing boat was it not? Perhaps try* entering the classic yacht regatta in St Tropez and using that as an argument for being a classic to get your discount.

*try might be doing some heavy lifting.

We only catch the tail end of the Classics scene in the UK - Don't let that fool you, it's alive and well across the channel, in the Med, and the Caribbean. Festival of the sea was booked up 4 years in advance last time I tried. Makes RTI look like Tuesday night bingo in January.

As others have said, there is no "official" Classic rating. "Classic" generally means a yacht that other yachtspeople regard as one! Basically, one that was well thought of when it was new, and has maintained a reputation for beauty, performance, quality of build and so on.

H Willie,

The only definition of Classic I have seen in the UK yachting world is the rbtry criteria for the British Classic Yacht Club regatta, held annually at Cowes and Levington on the Orwell Estuarh in Suffolk.

As far as I know, they do not yet admit grp boats although I understand the subject has been discussed.

Peter.

I think the uk ( and US) sailing scenes have died far more than france or other 'sailing' countries.

Even now la trinite is bustling with sailing boats coming and going and lots of new small 'day'boats taking hold. As you say a huge classic yacht scene in the morbihan. I will be moving my contessa down here next year.
