How to move a boat?? :)

I’d think about keeping the boat in Whitehaven, I had a couple of yachts there years ago. Good access to Scotland, Isle of Man and Ireland and a decent marina. Not too far from you in the great scheme of things.

Used to load Phossy Acid at Whitehaven many years ago ..... plus always had to remermber to clear the marker buoy that marked end of water outlet from the Nuke station !!

Mr BigV Twin. get boat hunting and harbour visiting. You need to know what all your local harbours look like before you leave you chosen one, so go there now. Take piccies see if yacht club evidence, look for social distance icecream and go for a walk along cliff tops and shore.

Just remember your chosen boat need good engine so safety and comfort, foresails are much much cheaper. If it looks clapped out and badly maintained walk away. Replacing all the depth guages chart plotters, VHF is sure to beckon on a dilapidated boat and though us old salts managed before they were invented they do greatly increase safety and reduce stress.

Just only buy within one days sailing of where you want to keep her. At 4kt maybe 15 to 30miles max. Else a low loader and £600 to 1000 beckons

Great advice. My thanks ?

I would suggest that Conwy is the obvious choice for the inexperienced sailor in that area. Lots of places to visit close by and a reasonably sheltered entrance in the prevailing winds. Plus a nice town to hang out in. None of those things are true for Liverpool, Fleetwood, or Whitehaven. More expensive though.

The marina is a lot more expensive and teh Conwy council moorings require a tender or boat taxi to get out to them

Nowt wrong with Whitehaven, it was a bit ‘Wild West’ on a Friday and Saturday when I was berthed there but good fun. Looks a lot more upmarket these days, probably since they closed Cap’n Senny’s

I had a river mooring for two or three years in Conwy before going to Whitehaven, nice town but the A55 was a nightmare in the summer even then (20 odd years ago).

Your tender plus outboard will cost a significant proportion of the main boat cost. But once owned they last years and enable you to go for moorings not marinas. Conwy seems very expensive at 1000pa for 10m boat on mooring or 4400 in Marina. By comparison Fleetwoods Marina is half the price though their moorings still seem expensive.

Moorings should be much cheaper. In addition to club membership I pay £250 for annual mooring in Cornwall and £70pa in the Bristol Channel

At the moment, I'm drinking my coffee from one of their mugs!

I'm sad to inform you that it doesn't always work like that. I'mm currently sat at my desk in Riyadh with my Sailing Holidays mug within reach (half full of tea).

I also have a 1 pint beer mug next to it that has never, ever, had beer in it. Oh, for the opportunity...:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::LOL: Adam's ale, it is then.

I spent 5 years with SABIC / SGS on the Gulf side and before that Petromin out of Jeddah .............. beer and wine glasses were used for primary function despite location.

My impression, admittedly based on very little evidence, is that the outcome of correct usage of such items depends very largely on who you've upset, quite possibly because of inadequately greased palms.

Not true actually .... It was accepted policy of 'infidels' to NOT include locals in any form ... it could lead to dire consequences if one day you decided to say no to them.

During my time with Petromin (Petroleum Ministry Saudi Arabia) - there was an ex Passenger Ship tied up in Jeddah ... you could see the Rolls Royce's .. Bentleys ... Merc's etc. roll up ... people get out and go on board ... later to appear 'helped' into their cars and whisked away ...

It was claimed that more JW Black and Blue Label was consumed in SA than anywhere else in the world !!

True story :

Al Jubail. I went into the Port to check out a ship ... we had arrangements with various that 'supplies' would be available to us.
I finish my job ... and :
The crate of 'samples' were put in the car. Along with other samples. About 3kg's of FROZEN 'bacon' wrapped in foil slipped down front of my trousers ...

I'm driving out of Port ... certain parts of my anatomy are saying Hi Nige ... what the f**** !

I have to stop for gate check ... Guard looks over car ... samples ... checks my pass etc. Just as I'm about to pull away - Customs Guy gets into passenger seat and demands I drive him to his place ... I try say no ... he just keeps pointing .. Go Go ...

I'm praying that the 'bacon' doesn't start 'smelling' ... I'm sure I can detect it ..

I drop him off and then drive to office .. get inside and frantically relieve my nuts of the frozen package !!
