Ditto. ?That's what I was going to say ! Beat me to it ...
All I would add is glue a pad on the other side so you don't need another person to stop the end of measuring rod at level to the surface ...

I’ve just tried it with reflections of a Maglite torch and it’s almost as good as a laser. I’ve measured a spare piece of glass and also my double glazing space.Thank you Dutyhog, you've hit the nail exactly on the head.
Thank you for other suggestions - I certainly didn't anticipate using lasers!
Simple trig to avoid a destructive measurement.
Sellotape a clear ruler either side with mm scale and measure the parallax at 3mm, 5mm and 7mm away from a point approximately opposite to triangulate and if you can’t immediately see how to work out the thickness then draw out the right angled diagram with thickness and distance from approximate opposite as the adjacent and opposite.
That's what I did.I'm Holes at the moment , I would find one of these sign making company who will be able to supply colour and size you need and have a chat , they may be willing for you to bring in the old window and wait while they cut and shape it .
The charge won't be much more then the over size you going to have to buy, then you going to have to cut it to shape.
Well that what I would do.
What I was suggesting earlier with a couple of clear rulers - but like the idea.
