How to Measure Window Thickness?

Thank you Dutyhog, you've hit the nail exactly on the head.

Thank you for other suggestions - I certainly didn't anticipate using lasers!
I’ve just tried it with reflections of a Maglite torch and it’s almost as good as a laser. I’ve measured a spare piece of glass and also my double glazing space.
And that German phone app works. The correction from glass to Perspex is small and can be ignored.

Simple trig to avoid a destructive measurement.

Sellotape a clear ruler either side with mm scale and measure the parallax at 3mm, 5mm and 7mm away from a point approximately opposite to triangulate and if you can’t immediately see how to work out the thickness then draw out the right angled diagram with thickness and distance from approximate opposite as the adjacent and opposite.

And do you have a correction chart for the refraction as the light passes between air and Perspex?
Drilling the hole and measuring the bolt is good, or a tyre depth gauge is good.
The other ideas, including this one, are asking for trouble!

As a bit of thread drift can ask about measuring the depth of hole? In orthopaedics we use depth gauge with a little foot on the end. In that way one can poke it along the hole made by the drill and then pull back until the foot catches on the far side. We commonly cannot see or feel the far side. We have different sizes for different width holes. The smallest can go down and measure a hole made with a 1.1mm drill to take a 1.3mm screw. I wondered if there a non orthopaedic version

I'm Working on one at the moment , I would find one of these sign making company who will be able to supply colour and size you need and have a chat , they may be willing for you to bring in the old window and wait while they cut and shape it .

The charge won't be much more then the over size you going to have to buy, then you going to have to cut it to shape.

Well that what I would do.

Ultrasonic thickness tester set for Perspex.. Accurate quick and non destructive. I imagine most surveyors will have one. Maybe you could simply ask one to check if in the yard at any time, can't imagine any cost would be involved for a few minutes spent.. Certainly something I would be happy to do if I was in the same yard.locally if ever asked

I have a coating thickness meter that measures the thickness of a non-magnetic coating on steel, so it measure the thickness of galvanising on steel. Mine is set up to measure microns, galvanising is parsimoniously coated or more generous from 10 to over 100 microns. I see no reason why one might not measure the thickness of acrylic over a steel plate (though I have obviously never tried it). Such meters are used by professionals in the surface coatings industry, paint, powder coating and galvanisers (though looking at the quality of galvanising - maybe that's wishful thinking).

Do you know anyone involved with high specification surface coatings?

I'm a little bit too far away to help.
