I have come across a vertical windlass (rope and chain) for sale about 200 miles away.

The seller is happy to see if the unit has marks to indicate the chain size. Does anyone know what the marks are for an 8mm chain please ?

PS I know it's a vertical windlass in a horizontal position :)

My 8mm Aqua 70 chain runs through a windlass marked 3/8. Which is a bit bizarre but there we are. I ordered a new 8mm gypsy to match the new 8mm chain but what arrived was identical to what was already on the boat - a gypsy marked 3/8. It's been absolutely fine with the new chain.

Looks like a SL Anchorman.

Massive Thread Drift:
If you come unstuck I have a manual one with a 3/8 gypsy sitting at home AND 90 of BBB unused spare chain for it . ( Went electric on last boat ).
Possibly a bit heavy for your boat ??

It might be neccesary to remove the gypsy to check. It it probably marked.
My Lofrans has the chain details cast into the back of the gypsy, only found after dismantling....not very helpful..but at least it was there to check before I ordered a length of chain!
Another method is to take the winch to a chandlers, and wrap known size chain around it, until you find one that fits!

Aaaargh ! My anchor chain is all 8mm.

It is indeed an Anchorman, and the dilemma facing me is whether to go for that vertical style, or to refurbish my Seatiger 555 with an 8mm gypsy.

Decisions, decisions...

It's a project for the coming winter anyway, so I have time to work through the arguments for going for shorter lengths of heavy chain (say 10mm) chain plus longer warp, or to stay with the existing setup of 8mm chain and attached warp.

And no, I am not even thinking about 6mm NASA approved chain...
