How to catch fish off a boat?

"a jointed 'blue sardine' winnow lure 130mm long with two 3-way hooks"

Is "spinning" with this any good? That is, just sitting on the boat and casting the thing and reeling it in?

I like to do this as I feel like a proper fisherman and the Captain thinks I am doing something useful.

Best bit of kit I got was from a Swedish pal. I call it a "Flipper" and it's a triangle of plastic where you connect the line so that when you tow it behind the boat, it plunges to the depths. When you catch a fish it reverses the action and comes quickly back to the surface. Much better than having a heavy weight on the line to prevent it skipping along at the surface.
What the "##%*&$??? is the proper name for this marvellous device? If I can find that out I am sure that there are instructions about making a plywood version via Google.

Haven't read all the posts so not sure whats been mentioned but I don't usually carry much more than mackerel feathers cut down to 3's to save on packets, jelly worms and red gills,
A piece of mackerel as bait on your feathers will catch you almost anything on a drift, Jelly worms and red gills are great for pollock and a fun way of catching them, You drop to the bottom and slowly wind back to the surface, You'll be very surprised how far up they follow them before they bite in, Just jigging with baited feather is the simplest and over here at least will get you Cod ,Ling , pollack ,coalies ,mackerel, wrasse etc etc Also if the mackerel are so thick you can't get down past them to get anything else, a big piece of bait helps keep them off. Enjoy

You can make an effective paravane out of a piece of 69 x12mm softwood about 7" long. Just drill a line of holes about 15mm. apart down the middle. If you want sophistication you put a steep taper on the front edge (inverted aerofoil). The top line goes about 1/4 to a 1/3 the way back depending on your speed, the bait line emerges from the lower side near the tail end. I takes about 10 mins. to establish which hole is best for speed, if it does not stay down move the front line fixing back. Won't rust and you can wrap the line around it when you have caught all you need. From PBO donkeys years ago.
