I was having my coffee this morning on board ! When I heard a bow thurster working hard, got on deck to watch ! I could see a largish boat reversing out of a mooring in a tight spot !

The skipper did not have a good visiblity and therfore once completed turn and started reversing he caught an othe vessel and was pulling that one along with the moorings ! Not a pretty sight !

Do you think people over use and rely on thier bow thurster?

if he slowed down a bit and done the turn slower he could of avoided the all thing.

Should the marina staff help? Or should they just hurry him up on the vhf from the lock?

If I had my way it would be mandatory for any vessel with a bow thruster to have a SVBT (small vessel bow thruster) Licence which would also cover the use of any other propellors which may be fitted including sails if a sailing vessel. A CCBTO (certifcate of competency in Bow thruster operations) would need to be held by anyone operating it.

Now,......I know some of you will say that this smacks of yet more regulation and back door taxation but I think it would be something of a revolution.

In fact I am off now to set up the worlds first ever training school for bow thruster operatives....please form an orderly queue behind haydn...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I used to think that using power(and lots of it) in tight spots was reserverd for sail boats owners but I stand corrected !

On the issue of cretifcates , well no !

Why can people not just wait to see the results of thier actions?

If you have buttons press them quick !

sorry if i sounded agressive Tom but I do think you should give the info to the dockmaster in writing and not let them hide from it.

I am in the dock for two months now, from what I can see they really do not care on what is going on ! so I do not want to waste my time.

I will see what the owner would like to do! and then decide!

If you notify the marina in writing soonest as well the owner it might well help the owner if things go pear shaped. A few years ago we watched a charter boat damage a friends boat (and others), notified them and the marina. It came to a bun fight and because our report was logged at the time it helped greatly.

$hit happens. We all have good days and we all have bad days. Bit of an arse tho if he damaged someone elses boat and didn't leave details. Maybe he radioed the marina and told them?
