'tis a guestimate I admit. I'll settle for 1 foot now I've recovered from the surprise . We normally have to step down to the little boat by a foot and she is now sitting proud of the edge of the mooring, while the water is really rattling by. The river narrows here so that might be why. However, I haven't seen it this high for quite a while.

Edit: Just measured it. Up 14 inches over Saturday.

Must be a local blip, only a few inches up, here on weir stream below the Shep weirs.

Yea but all the boats will need wheels and have to lifted over the lock gates with winch.
Imagine the que on a busy Sunday !
Still at least inconsiderate people will have no reason to turn up at 1am just cos its high water and expect you to open the lock.

Lived on the river for the past 30 years and can honestly say that
river levels have not altered any more now than when I first arrived. There have always been variations between seasons and years.Flood years and drought years.Not convinced about GW as far as the Thames is concerned.It has become a political football and a vast money earner for some. I am more concerned about water polution than I am about GW.

If the level goes up they open a series of taps and if it goes down they shut them again.

The trouble starts when there;s no water and the taps are shut - what then
Conversely when all the taps are open.... glug, glug, glug.

I would guess that the recent drought has dried and hardens the ground meaning the run-off was quick, also there are no crops around to delay the run-off. Hence a smallish amount of rain created a quick effect.

Living beside and observing the 2 Shepperton weirs for the past 30 years does give me a little insight, and river level management is generally excellent; I am not seeking to convert GW terrorists, just offering my observations.

I know were the water is going,its runnig down Kingston Hill ! Came down the hill this morning about 11 o'clock and it was gushing out of the pavement. I meen vast quantities,one inch thick from Kingston hospital to the roundabout. At the bottom it must of been a foot deep.Still going at 4 oclock tonight and the police had closed the road.Never seen anything like it.Pavement was six inchs up for at least 20 yds

That's great that BW have so many cables and taps and sensors , but they don't contribute towards keeping the water levels under control.

The Thames is managed by the EA and it's team of crack lockstaff.
