How many Revs?? - Yanmar 8

Is it worth getting a Yanmar rev counter or is there a way of telling when the engine is running at the optimum rate without one. Upto now I have backed off when blacker than normal smoke starts coming out of the exhaust.

Can anyone offer me advise on this, also it has come to my attention that there are transducers (not Yanmar) which you can fit to your engine, does anyone have any experience of these.

your diesel engine has a rev limiter - in theory it is impossible to over rev. indeed, the black smoke suggests an excess of fuel, which in turn suggests that the engine is being held below max revs by lack of air. contact e p barrus, they will give you the figures and give you an experts view.

bit like a rev counter in a car, its interesting to know the figures but not really a huge amount of practical use. i would have fitted a rev counter if i could have found one, but instead borrowed an optical one to check min and max. it is more accurate anyway.
