Quite a few years ago, probably about 1996, I scanned and saved a number of technical articles in YM, mostly by Nigel Calder. They were very practical, on rescuing equipment swamped by seawater, identifying alternator faults when at sea, etc. About four years ago the exact same articles were reprinted!
Perhaps it's time I gave up my subscription, particularly as we are away cruising throughout the summer and I read five months-worth of articles one after another.
I do subscribe to YM, have done for several years, but each issue I generally wonder why I continue. I do get irritated with the layout, and the silly 'See YM Plus for more details' labels everywhere. No thanks, I'm reading a magazine, I just don't want to go to the PC and look at 'YM Plus'.
Bought a PBO this month (at the airport) and not overly impressed with that either, and was really annoyed to find a mobo article in it. (Nothing against mobos, it's just that I thought it was a sailing mag). The layout is a real jumble, too.
On the other hand I've been getting ST for several years and generally I enjoy that. It's refreshingly different from the IPC stuff, IMHO of course.
I think the articles are too dumbed down generally....
It maybe a bit precocious to say this, but the majority of boat owners I meet, are what I would describe as intelligent folks (although some might argue that this forum disproves that statement /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif), and I wonder if a bit more detail and depth would be good in some articles.... eg instead of testing 12 anchors and stating which ones held and by how much, perhaps go into the science behind it a little more, discussing tip weights, fluke area to weight ratios etc etc rather than just mention them in a side box.... or perhaps articles on tidal height calcs that cover different datums and the effcts of atmospherics etc, or even how tidal height prediction models vary..... a good occasional 3 or 4 page in depth technical article would be appreciated every now and then... the weather series in ST by Chris Tibbs is a good example IMHO....
Oops! I voted (2 )before I saw the word "Yachting".
Don't count My vote.
Subsribe to MBN, buy MBY now and again buy PBO sometimes and Yachting World once a year ish.
Sometimes buy Inland Waterways, Canal boat,Fishing world , Don't Canal, Don't care
By the time I've read The Sunday Times, the Local rag, The Daily post, the Daily post through the letter box, the daily "e" mails, the daily stuff at work, the daily crap that falls out of aformentioned Publications, My horoscope, My threatening letters(from spouses previous)Bulletins ,Notice boards,Traffic warnings,Adverts,Menues,Sign posts,Health warnings(Smoking seriousley harms you and others around you) PM's ,Threads Threat,s Thingies, I'm Fecked.
Must catch up on a book I,m reading. Entitled "All for a bottle of Whiskey"
Anybody else read it to save Me the bother?
Is it worth it?
Daughter gave it to Me as a birthday presi.
She reckoned I,m on here too mutch and should "Get a life" and read something more interesting than IPC Mags etc etc etc etc etc etc .
What der reckon?
I was just skimming through Dec PBO (the only one I bought this year) prior to binning it when I noticed that from next month there will be a motorboat SECTION in it !
Anyone able to deduce IPC's strategy ?
Practical Boat Owner should include all boats (No Ships just boats) but it is the Practical bit that I miss and have been a subscriber from almost day one, I think alot of the Practical has gon out of the mag and am now in two minds if I will renew my subscription when it come up next time.
Des Sleightholme. Seem to remember He was YM Editor once?
"Off Watch with Old Harry" one of His writings?
Sure I've got that in the Attic. Yer got Me brain cell working overtime now ,you sailorman you! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
It is in the modern nature of things that journos move about between titles and so we get to the situation in which readers remember more about previous articles and (dare I say it) probably know more about the topics than some of the journos.
hence you feel that your'e not learning much.

In what way does Practical Boat Owner preclude motor boats?

Absolutely it doesn't, however I was always under the impression it was a sailing mag anyway. As it is formally becoming not-just-a-sailing mag, I shan't be buying it again.
