I have a light mountain style bike ... one of the early Townsend ... not exactly as good as the Claude Butler I had as a kid !!

I find the short handlebars to be a pain as it makes it too sensitive ... plus no mudguards .... (I have clip on guards ... just never got round to fit them).

We are pretty health conscious. We run most mornings if we are not wingfoiling or kite surfing. We get up and go by 0600 as its too hot to run when the sun is blazing.
We have 2 Bromptons that will carry a whole supermarket trolleys worth of shopping. We don't use them much in the Caribbean but we use them a lot more in Europe.

They are banned on public transport in parts of Spain if not all, I suspect other countries will do the same, a few of them caught fire, lithium battery's apparently.

I'm not in need of a mobility aid at present but can see the need on the far horizon. My issue is cardiac so within my limits I am fine. I have idly looked at the regs a d as far as I can see there is nothing stopping you from using an e scooter if you need mobility help . There is no definition of the level of disability stated, a blue badge is not needed although it would help if faced with officialdom. You would need 4 and 8mph speed limiters, but I think some scooters need these.
I suspect the problem with fires is a bit circular. You can't buy a legal scooter, so you have to buy an illegal one , which then bursts into flames, I am sure that if you could buy a Giant, Specialised or some such reputable brand it would be much less of a issue.

The speed issue really needs to be addressed .... many of the minis can hit over 20kph .... I saw an advert for a mini that said 40kph !! The mind boggles at that doing slalom through pedestrians !

I wonder what the weight limit / carry capacity of these things is? Last week on a day in Grenoble I saw a guy that must have been 130kg on one, whether he had reinforced it or not and just how long the batteries would last as well as why doesn't the fat bastard walk crossed my mind he was certainly going at well past walking pace.

I have one....folding e-scooter...which I bought for the boat, and I did use it for a while...unfortunately I made a miscalculation....I thought that a long range e-scooter with off road capability would be best...so that is what I have, and it’s really good...thick knobbly tyres and suspension. I used it for a while....but it is so so heavy that I decided to stop taking it because getting it off and on the boat was doing my back in

mmm definitely not what I was considering. I've looked at various just out of interest in local shops in my town .... but first thought - HEAVY !!

The one the Driver came on here in China was really lightweight and folded up compact. It even had a seat .... not just a stand-on style as I thought about.

You've touched on a point that I often make .....

We have all these TV / Internet adverts / advisories about exercise and 'healthy eating' .... but we have Supermarkets full of junk food and many people whizzing about on e-bikes ....

Me - yes I'm fat ... 110kgs on a 5' 7" frame !! I know I should do more and get that weight down .....

Drivers was similar style - but I think a bit lighter - and of course without the doggy trailer !!

Love it !!
Originally the trailer was to collect pizzas....one night I took my scooter to the pizza takeaway, and when I tried to get back on the scooter with the pizza boxes...I realized that I couldn’t ride and hold them at the same time....nearly had an accident... and when I finally arrived at the boat the pizzas looked like they had been in the tumble dryer 😱

When I drive to local Burger place and pick up to take home ... I take a small cardboard box ... then the bag of burgers / chips and drinks are stable and don't have to be held to avoid falling over....

My wife built a bike based on a Claude Butler Frame as a teenager. She loved it, but had to sell it to fund her college life. Then she met me
She joined the local cycling club. Her dad says that at first she used to get left behind, but by the time she was 15-16 she had turned the tables & has a certificate for doing 50 miles in 2 hours 10 minutes. Not bad for a yound girl on a heavy bike with toe clips etc & all the old gear change stuff etc..
She & a couple of friends were stopped one night on the way home from Danbury to Chelmsford by a policeman. He pointed out that 38MPH at night on unlit roads was not a safe speed for young girls on bikes .

Would love an e-scooter but unfortunately live in the UK where despite carbon targets we’ve decided to outlaw them and the police regularly steal them from children rather than encourage green transport options. Apparently they’re dangerous, although from what I can tell most “scooter accidents” are caused by cars.

I agree with you....for every person going to work on a e-scooter it’s one less car on the road. A bicycle does the same...except you lock it up outside when you go to work....and it’s not there for your return journey...a scooter goes inside with you. There’s a lovely small city just north called Aix-en-Provence...it’s a student town, like Oxford...when I first went there every student was on a bicycle now they are on e-scooters.
Of course they have been emasculated here as well...insurance and restricted in power...I think I’m the only one in the country who’s legal...but I have noticed more kids wearing helmets which is good, they used to laugh at the old bloke on a scooter with a helmet😂🤣😳
