Nope .. I'm afraid some daft bugger will ram me whilst moored up on my pontoon and sink me despite the plethora of fenders and sundry other objects draped over the vulnerable side. If I sank then with Hythe being enclosed , I'd bew worried that the water I'd displace would flood all the properties in the area .. would it be that hould be liable or the unfortunate who sank me? Anyway if I fill the boat with ping pong balls that should stop it happening should'nt it?

Sorry, didn't notice them - I blame the sun glaring on the screen (poorly sited workstation). Hmm, I feel an industrial injury claim for eyestrain coming on... ;-)
Jimi, don't you mean fenders? Surely all the ping pong balls would escape and clog up all the boat's engine intakes thus rendering you liable for even more damage?

I have 8 fenders, all matching, plus the obligatory monster a bit bigger than a spacehopper.
Ahem, i also have some fender covers/socks. Actually, last year a bloke turned up on the quay and said he could make nice new fender covers in navy much nicer than the greyish ones whioch were sposed to match the silver bits on the boat but don't really , so i sed ok.
And the new fender covers are indeed wonderful. In fact, they are so wonderful that i was a bit worried about them getting spoiled, like the old fender covers did, which went a bit faded. So, I cut off the bottoms of the old fender covers, and used them as fender cover covers, to protect the new fender covers from getting faded and/or getting worn.
Howevr, it is well know that the fender socks/covers can hold grime from rain and then cause "bruising" on the gelcoat. So, over the winter i temporarily removed the fender cover covers, and the fender covers, and left the boat with naked fenders. But, as a result of this, the fenders are a bit manky, so i washed them with special boat cleaner, which partially worked, but they still don't look that good. I think i now need new fenders. At some point during the coming season, i may have new fenders together with the new fender covers - and of course the fender cover covers to protect the whole lot. Or of course, i might just keep the old fenders for tooling around and the NEW fenders for best. Not sure.
Babies are best suspended by the ankles, quite high and face inward if rafting up. Personally, I'd never stoop so low. I merely sit crossed legged on the foredeck, rock backwards and forwards, and mutter "No, no, they're good people. You mustn't hurt them," whilst casting furtive glasses at the would-be rafters.
Works an absolute treat - have painted all my fenders as marrows and put them back in the greenhouse.

Re: Q. What do you buy the man who has everything?
Like mooring lines, you can never have enough fenders, especially in the Hythe lock when certain motorboats are there too!! I've got eight, mainly used 4 each side, though sometimes six and two, or three and three with a couple over the transom. Then sometimes, I like to have one on the bows, just in case I overshoot, though I do also like to keep a roving one handy for those situations that even my brilliant, effecient, powerful and face saving (!) bowthruster cannpot recover me from...........
Oh Lord, what the hell am I talking about?? I'm going for a lie down.....
