How long have you owned your boat?

Awol - these are the more innocent of my small hours thoughts! I’ve heard it said that Donald John doesn’t make Harken products himself, preferring to spend his time bricklaying…
Donald John is a brickie short of a load. Might be because of his small hands

Currently boat since 2015 - was at the SBS that year as demo boat . Now no longer made so a fairly limited number about/ on market but does everything we need and no plans to sail to Med or do Arc so we’ll set up for us . No intention of changing unless we move to dark side of semi displacement mobo and can afford the derv and engine servicing etc or if we can no longer cope with a stack pack main and feel need to embrace the in mast reefing as age solution.

My Mystere was shown at the SBS in ‘73 and my current boat in 2000, so that means I’ve had a 50% hit rate.

Well it’s our first one, have to start somewhere 🙂

It may get changed for something slightly bigger and diesel after a couple of years, we may keep it for evermore or we might get the boating thing out of our system.

I’ll try and remember this thread if anything changes 😂

Well I’m quite new here and have followed some of the threads, so not sure this will go down too well! But we’ve bought a 2007 Bavaria 33. In Greece - not the Ionian.

A bit of background as to why. I’ve been sailing since I was 6 months old - started on a Seamew 22, then a Macwester 27, then a Victoria 34. So I’ve always been drawn to older boats. However my wife is a lot newer in sailing terms and started with the Greek flotilla thing, then charter and then we had a share in a Bavaria 42 for about 10 years.

When I suggested a Contessa 32 (my dream boat) she recoiled in horror. Same with a Westerly Fulmar or Storm which I also like. We then looked at centre cockpit boats like a Moody but recognised the difficulty in stern to mooring. As we enjoyed the Bavaria, it was comfortable and sailed well we decided to look for one of them - around a 33 size. Spent ages looking for a non charter one and eventually found one that fitted what we want, in great condition - albeit not the cheapest.

We’re never going to sail the Atlantic - I’ve done that and don’t need to do it again and Mrs PL won’t. It’s just for Greek cruising.

Chatting to a friend at the weekend. We (Mrs Shuggy and I) are now in our 17th year with the same boat. I don’t think we’ll ever sell her (boat, not Mrs Shuggy*) until we give up sailing or hand the boat onto our children. My friend suggested that not many people keep their boats for 17+ years. Ours is a 70s plastic ‘classic’. Anyone else in the same position? Marisca/awol beats us by some margin I suspect. Anyone else out there who can better 17 years with no intention to move on?

We’re now at the point where we’ve replaced various bits of kit for the 3rd/4th time and it’s probably time for a major refit but I am some way off retiring and using my own labour!

*Sensible offers accepted.
Some boats are heirlooms and others are tools that serve a purpose. On the heirloom side of things I have a 1930's half decker that I bought 25yrs ago and will take to my grave. On the tool end, I sold my Finn when I was no longer strong enough to pull the sheet in with my left arm! I think production yachts tend more towards the tool end of the spectrum - sold my Jeanneau Sunfast 35 when time got poor, but now looking for the next proper boat.

If you do remember this thread….then you are truly hooked on boating 🤣

We seem to change boats quite often.
I've still sort of got the Wayfarer I bought in 2010, although I lent it to a friend and it's somewhat AWOL at the moment.
First and second yachts were both 4yrs, third one 5yrs, fourth/current one since November '24 so still feels pretty new.

I would like to make clear that I have nothing whatsoever to do with the whereabouts of your Wayfarer!
