How has the Fuel Duty

affected your boating

It hasn't, I still burn about 1 1/2 gallons/hr so it's a cheap as running the car down the motorway.

I use a moderate amount of diesel in a season, but fuel cost is still a very small proportion of overall costs of yachting. I guess it may make a much bigger difference to Mobo owners.

The main problem is the increased time in putting a few litres of diesel, having to go up to marina office, filling in forms etc., instead of just paying the man on the pump.

We have not experienced any form filling on the south coast, so long as you go with the standard 60/40 split. The Marina assumes that everyone is using the standard splits.

Otherwise, we have just paid for the fuel as usual. Probably costs us another £250 for the year.

Not a lot

.
We only burn around a litre an hour at cruising revs, so it is not a huge expense - especially as we sail whenever possible. Probably used about 40 litres this season.

Despite increasing our fuel burn per hour (gone from an 18HP to a 29HP engine) it has made no difference this year - infact we've probably used it more (will have to check the logs!) - but then we did reduce the cost quite significantly with a little trip to the CI's ...

We have made some slight changes...

1) I dont use diesel to light my BBQ anymore.
2) I dont dump barrels of oil off the back of the boat, and then ignite the spilled fuel with my flare gun at the key moment to escape badies, anymore.

The only pain for me is that you can't go to France carrying fuel in jerry cans. I only have a 90l tank and carry 2 20l cans. If I'm heading across the Channel I normally fill the jerry cans before I leave.

I called recently at a certain nameless harbour. There is a pontoon with a fuel pump, and the arrangement is that you go up to the near-by garage, and ask for someone to come down to serve you at the pontoon.

The garage man must have been having a bad day, and growled, "How much do you want?" "Oh", says I, "probably about 80 litres. Why? How much is it?"
"£1-06", he said.
"What?" said I, "is that for the 60/40%?"
"Nah, we're not doing that", he said.

Being a rural sort of a place, this garage had the normal line-up of pumps on the forecourt, with the addition of a pump for red diesel (labelled NOT FOR ROAD USE). Its price was 64p.

Guess what I did. Clue: I didn't use it on the road.
