I didn't know how to do the threaded mode until I saw Brendans explanation.

Good question - with important considerations for how one contributes. A recent exchange I threaded to save having to quote when responding to different "sub-threads". In the light of the pattern of results I suspect I would not do this again.
Flat. The only problem sometimes is in trying to work back to see which post a new post is referring to. The only guide is the author's name, and he may have entered several posts in one thread. Would it be useful if the posts in a thread were serial numbered, so that we could read for example "Re 47"?
it's very easy to see which post a reply is referring to, without going into threaded mode. You simply click on the username at the top of the post, and it opens a new window showing the original post that the reply is to
