I live aboard, previously on a 35ft sail boat, currently a 45ft mobo. Anyone planning to live on a 19-22ft sailboat has to be mad.

My 25ftr is comfy ... has all facilities - BUT I could not bring myself to live on it !! It would not take long to bring on cramped feeling and wish to return to 'civilised' living !!

That would be too expensive if it was free and delivered :)

I don't know ... for someone willing to put in the time and effort ... photos seem to show her alongside and internal do not show water in her and cabins relatively clean ..... seems most gear is there....

Engine ?????? Yeh well ...... that'll cost a bit whatever done ..

Mac 28 ..... not bad boats in their day ...

Not a job I'd take on .... but ????

The 28 Beni fitted from tank testing regarding its bilge keels and by reports seems to be a reasonable sailer.Confontingsuch a resturation one needs to establish a go to place like a bar or pub. It’s the journey that’s important?

People start with quite high expectations
There’s what takes their fancy
( insert photo of oligarchs floating palace )

And then there’s The Budget
( eBay , cheapest boat for sale …)
The thing imo is to have a plan
You can live in anything for a year if it’s worth it to get through college /save a deposit /buy a house /blah blah

As a dead end skid row option- noooo don’t do it !

Well if we’re going cheap …
For less than the quoted transport figure
Here’s a fixer upper
And it’s big enough
And it’s a bilgekeeler
And there’s a mooring available
And it’s in an area with possibilities
Just a thought ?

That depends on your point of view. To go sailing, Paul's spot on, but for someone who needs a liveaboard boat next week and is flexible for the location, it could work. Sure there'll be plenty do do, including some serious work on the hatch to keep the water out, and you'd absolutely have to have mains power (= far more expensive mooring), but for someone with lots of time, some skill and a little money it could become a half-decent home for a while.

As for getting her into shape for sailing, there are far better ways to get afloat. From the photos, that engine is scrap, and marine engines are expensive - I'd budget absolute minimum £2,000 for a second hand engine, then you've got to fit it, which, years ago, cost me the best part of £1000 for bits, plus labour. Then there's the mast and rigging. I wouldn't go out of the harbour the way that lot is, and getting someone to sort it wouldn't be far short of £2000. Sails? If there are any, they're almost certainly knackered, quite possibly rotten. Knackered sails may not matter too much, as that boat will never be great to windward, but you'll need something. Then there's instruments and VHF - £500 or so. Finally, all the other bits and bobs. £20 here, £30 there, but it all adds up - another couple of thousand could easily evaporate.

Far better to spend £5k for something that works with another £1000 for immediate fettling. There'll still be work to be done, but it can happen over a time, you'll be sailing in the meantime, and won't have spent any more than for that poor old Macwester.
