Very simple ... You\'ve been surfing

and opening up yourself to ad-lib data-miner/tracker cookies which you now have onboard.

From your post your are an open target ...And the spammers are exploiting open targets.

David, without being rude: "Get streetwise."

There is also the possibility that someone subcribed you becuase they thought you might be interested, like a friend or family member.

Scuttlebutt is definetly the *only* true yachting newsletter available, no excuse though if they did send it un-solicited (which I doubt very much!!) why not email the editor David and ask him editor@ removespam scuttlebutteurope.com

Cheers

Stephen

Re: Street wise!

much of the crude American spam you get comes about because people chose an e mail address that is "guessable" ie as made up of your name as in fred_smith@hotmail.com

proved this when i enrolled my daughter on hotmail under two different addy's - one made up of her name, and the other made up of an odd sentence. the first got spam within 24 hrs and before it had been used at all. the second still doesnt get spam 2 years later, and it is used a lot.

what i dont understand is why it all comes from the USA. have e maill adresses with virgin and freeserve using my names as above, but never get spam. hotmail is 20 or more items per day. and neither hotmail#s filter nor spybot nor zone alram nor nortons firewall have had an effect on preventing it.

How many e-mails have you seen with long lists of e-mail addresses left by each person who forwarded a good joke or picture.

It's very easy to collect every e-mail address in the list, of the tens of lists in some cases.

It's a good practice to simply delete them all after you have selected forward, however your own e-mail address will be still be available to anyone it gets forwarded to if the next person does not delete it first.

It only takes a few seconds, and may help to reduce spam in the long term.

Re: Street wise!

None of the programmes you mention are designed to filter e mails and therefore will not serve this purpose. Effective filtering relies on you putting in the correct words to filter out the e mails you don't want and if you are using the free version of Hotmail you only have a limited (insufficient) number of filters.
The most effective way is using a programme such as Mailwasher which will filter/delete at the server and save you the download time. Some people are critical of these programmes but generally they haven't taken the time to set up the filters correctly, my filters contain over a 100 words. I wouldn't be without it now and very few unwanted messages get through, nor do genuine messages get blocked.

I agree with Steven Sails - it would be very out of character for the Scuttlebutt newsletter to be spammed, so maybe someone put your name forward. I subscribe and its the one email each day I look forward to getting in amongst all the work related dross!

Its associated with Seahorse magazine, which itself is the magazine of RORC, so a reasonable pedigree.

If you've any interest in yacht racing news I thoroughly recommend it (although my recommendation maybe carries less weight than the list of luminaries they've listed in their email!).
