Hello

Just wondering if anyone could offer me some help

I have a mercury seapro engine pullstart but would like to convert it into an electric start, can anyone tell me if i need a mercury starter motor or can i use another one from another make of engine?

Whats going to be the cheapest option for adding an electric start to this engine and what else is required apart from the starter motor?

Thanks for your time

May not be economically viable, but I guess only you can decide on the cost benefit. As you will need not only the starter but possibly such things as brackets, maybe a new flywheel incorporating the ring gear or have to retrofit a ring gear. Then there will be solenoid switch, extra wiring etc etc. If you can find a blown up electric start version for a song then possibly it might make sense, otherwise especially with new parts it will cost you an arm and a leg.

You'll also need a battery and an charging coil in the engine if you want the engine to charge the battery. Merc spare part prices are high and it's likely to be much better to trade the engine in for a factory electric start version. But if you want to do it all the parts are available: starter motor, ring gear, coil to charge battery, harnesses and boxes of electronics/rectifier, and controls/switches, and perhaps a day's labour. £750 I'd guess

The starter motor might be the same as another make of engine but hard to know. It'll be the same as the matching Mariner model obviously, and also Merc share plenty of parts with Yamaha. You could try one of the US forums on outboards where there is loads of this sort of info

Good advice already.... could be done but its a lot of changes and prob will not be worth it. Sell yours and buy and e-start model!
