How and where to spend a week at Hayling Island

Our daughter has been asked to crew at the 420's Youth Nationals being held at Hayling Island SC from the 9th-14th of April. We are strongly considering making a trip from Poole in our cruising yacht (Oceanis 44CC) and find a mooring / marina in the area near the action. We will then have relatively cheap digs and if the weather is half reasonable have nice time on the boat finishing off the winter job list. We have a 1.8m draft and like to stay upright when the tide goes out. Any suggestions for place / places to moor? We don't necessarily have to stay in one spot for the full 5 days.

Why not speak to HISC themselves, they have a significant number of deep water moorings and many will not have boats on that early in the season. Getting to/from the boat will be an issue away from the w/e when the ferry doesn't run.

Thanks Ken, yes my chart still shows it as Sparkes Yacht Harbour and it is very adjacent. Being alongside will definitely be an advantage and it looks like a short walk from the chart to HISC. I'll check out the MDL website and see if I need to remortgage.

Cheers I hadn't thought of that - the idea to take Moana was only floated a few minutes ago. Hopefully with the racing on there will be safety boats available for ferrying and we have a rubber duck (ancient Avon) which would be OK if not too far from shore. I'll give the club a call tomorrow morning.

Great - Oceanis 44 sounds spacious, can I book 2 spaces for our two boys also doing the 420 nationals (bit far to get my own boat from Largs)
You could also practice with a week at HISC in April for the Youths (then the qualifier at end April, to set up for a charter yacht at the Europeans in Turkey in August - we simply had to do the charter in the Hauraki Gulf before the 420 worlds in NZ!)

The last time I picked up a buoy belonging to HISC it was not cheap! So I would suggest that you contact them first and explain your connection with the racing and do a deal. They have a launch to ferry people back and forth. If you can do a deal it would be a fabulous place to stay, and you should be able to watch the racing easily.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Chichester Harbour.

Sparkes is the obvious choice for me. There is a cracking resteraunt too. Chuggins should be along shortly with more detailed advice.

Is that Easter weekend? Because the LSC Cruise involve dinner in the Spinny Tower, SWMBO has decided against it this year so we were going to go gunkholing in Chi, but if it is full of 420s maybe we should have a rethink.

In Sparkes when the tide is out on the one side you see caravans on the other side you see concrete. When the tide is in you just get a higher view of the same caravans and concrete!

Oh! And lots and lots of Baverias!

Lived in Emsworth in the 60's as a kid and sailed with Dad on a 16ft clinker Dayboat moored in Chi harbour (at the end of Beech Road). My memories of Hayling are a quiet place with a chuffing great holiday camp at the end.

Took my own family back there in the early 90's and perceived that nothing had changed.

Langstone was good though. Dad was friendly with an old salt called Les Hudson who lived in the ivy covered cottage behind the Royal Oak (or is the The Ship - I always get confused). Les was great at cockling and cooking up a feast. Happy memories !!

As suggested earlier you could probably use one of the HISC moorings or you could anchor out of the fairway just off the club or in one of several locations nearby.

If you don't want to use a dinghy to get ashore then SPARKES is litterally just around the corner!

As McB says, well worth contacting HISC about staying on the moorings. We are all a nice bunch there, really!!!
