I have a Honda BF5 outboard with a 13 litre Honda steel fuel tank ( tank 1980/90s at a guess). The fuel line and fittings are fixed to the boat and I want a spare fuel line for home testing. The bayonet fitting at the tank end seems to be obsolete as I cannot find one anywhere. The female tank fitting is marked Keihin which is the fuel components/carb/fuel injection manufacturer part owned by Honda, but the current Honda tank end fittings I see on the internet are entirely different.

I can buy a new tank with a new type fuel line, but if i can locate a Keihin male bayonet it would be nice.

Also, should I ditch my steel fuel tank anyway and replace it with plastic ? This would seem to give a problem as the steel tank has a cap that is also the breather which has a tube which vents fumes (plus pressure release) into the cockpit. I can't see a similar arrangement for a breather vent on the plastic tanks from the photos (maybe there is one and I just don't recognise it) and that concerns me a bit as the tank is under the cockpit.

I've sent an enquiry to Honda about the bayonet, but I'd appreciate any knowledge about Honda plastic fuel tanks or any generic plastic tanks worth considering or "must avoids" and the question of the breather arrangement.

Can't help you with the fitting, but just to comment that the laws of physics dictate that all such fuel tanks must have a vent, in order to allow air to replace fuel as it is used. Fumes should not emerge when the engine is running, as there will be negative pressure in the tank, but if, for instance in warm weather, fumes may emerge when the engine is off, simply close the vent on shut-down.

The plastic tanks also have a breather in the filler cap. The universal type tanks(i had one) are exactly the same as the photo, except the fuel line fitting to the tank is a simple spigot, the pipe pushes over it and is secured with a jubilee type clip.

Maybe you should contact Rob Perry Marine Ltd Raymonds Hill, Axminster, Devon EX13 5ST.
Tel. 01297 631 314 sales@robperrymarine.co.uk

"This outboard fuel tank is ideal for using with Honda DF5hp and upwards. If you are unsure whether your engine might require additional/different connection fittings, especially where an outboard engine is classed as a bit older, then please give us a call".

Bloody Hell...I drove past Rob Perry's place near Axminster a number of times the week before last when i was down there....never thought to call in as my mind was elsewhere.

Nothing I have seen looks anything like the bayonet and I'm flummoxed as to why my photos will not upload. I havn't had a speedy reply from Honda either...press on !!

I don't know why your photos won't upload.
Where are your photos stored: on your computer or a "cloud" storage? I have a lot of photos on Flickr and if I tried to upload from their I think I would have problems.

They are bluetoothed from my phone to my desktop folder on my W7 computer, but don't seem to want to go to YBW. I can email them to myself though.

Honda just bounced my enquiry back and said "Contact a dealer" ... However the wonderful lady at Methley Bridge chandlery (Honda Outboard dealers in Castleford) knew exactly what I meant and promised to check if the bayonet is still in the parts catalogue. It is....so she has ordered the bits and we are going to make up a new fuel line when I go down there later this week. Honda do a ready made fuel line with primer bulb and bayonet and engine fuel spigot.....but its nearly £150 !! So when I go we are going to make one up for about £70 using the Honda terminals and her pattern fuel line and primer bulb which sounds a bit more like it.

I really dunno about the photos as they appear on the pooter from the phone just fine. Anyway thanks everybody for input.

Hi there,

Did you ever manage to get a answer to your question, as I am also looking to get a couple of these fuel connectors.

regards

Andy
