Hi all - me again! Apologies for all the questions, hopefully I will be able to make a contribution soon!

I was wondering if anyone had any contact points or websites where I could get some more information on homeschooling. Our son will be 5 when we go cruising and we would need to try and stick to the UK schooling syllabus. Any pointers would be great.

Many thanks

Hi,

We've just returned from Med having taught our 2 children (now 8&9) for the summer 2004 and 2005 terms. Originally planned 18 month trip but family bereavement cut it to 2 long summers.

Coming back to the UK at the end it was important to us to stick broadly in line with the syllabus at home, especially for key maths/literacy/science subjects. Language, history, geog becomes one big field trip.

Initially we planned to use WES - worldwide education service correspondence courses but found lots of free info on the DFES gov website. For numeracy it has day by day lesson plans. For science it has units which is you buy a basic kids science experiments book you can have a lot of fun with.

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes is the link to paste for dfes site. Can download and print off the files or request copy (which was free!!! and came with nice plastic file).

WES info was fine, but pricey and probably not strictly necessary for a 5 year old. Maybe depends on your own confidence in ability to teach yourself.

BBC kids website has useful links to syllabus topics that can access in net cafes, as does national goegraphic.

Dorling Kindersley do excellent CD rom learning ladder series (1 per year) covering maths/english/science for each year group. Not sure it reaches down to 5yo but others CD roms do and if you have laptop are excellent for interactive learning.

Happy to answer any other queries you have if you need any other help. Email: yachttequilla@aol.com.

Enjoy the travels and make the most of it.

Steve

I got your PM OK but was not able to reply, it just failed with an error when I replied. Maybe it needs enabling?

Thanks for the link info, I will add it to our site shortly.
