Holman 26 heating

Hello,

ive recently bought (subject survey) a Holman 26, wooden. its a lovely boat . I would however like to know what heating options people have thought of. I have seen that the hanging locker has been sacrificed i was hoping to avoid that. how practical is it to mount a bulkhead heater? It would be just over or at least near the head of the sleeper, should one be sleeping on the settee berth, and not in the spacious (just kidding) forward v berth. Im not keen on a forced air set up and would rather it was not gas.

You will struggle to find a suitable space on such a small boat to fit a heater without compromising something - either floor space, sleeping space or losing a locker. The heaters to look at are the Taylors, Dickinsons or Pansy charcoal for bulkhead mount. They take up a lot of room, need insulating from the bulkhead and are best sited low down or you find the fierce heat at head height rather uncomfortable. You also need to consider the exhaust flue - getting enough length and siting where it comes out on deck. I have a paraffin victory in a similar size wooden boat and site it on a shelf against the forward bulkhead effectively forming a trotter box for feet when sleeping. Looks good, but limited value for heating the whole boat because of the height and offset location.

Don't know the exact layout of your boat, but if you have a full height locker the other side of the main bulkhead, siting the heater inside that with a cutout so the front is facing the cabin is a good solution. The flue can then go up through the locker and provide some heat to the forecabin.

This is a Sigmar 100 diesel heater.Cabin table removed. I also have a Webasto 2000.
The Webasto for instant heat and heating whilst sailing and the Sigmar for at anchor.

That's a great set up, I'd be interested in the Webasto 2000 option as the companionway to the forward cabin on CW is in the centre, and while I have seen either a Pansy on the wall or a diesel one in other Holman 26s im not sure it works. Im not really wedded to the tow berths in the main cabin either, but id like to wait before i start knocking it about.
